My friend told me about these saws a month or two ago, and I was impressed by the videos I saw online. I continued to do my research on them, and then waited till I bought house and was ready to start building a work bench. I was looking at both the 10" sliding miter saw that I ended up with, and the 14" chop saw. In the end the 10" miter saw seemed more useful, and should still handle all of my steel cutting needs. And adjusting the angle of the blade rather then the angle of the clamp seems much easier.

I was able to find the saw for $240 online, but my local steel yard sells them for $280, and I like to buy locally when I can. I finally made it out to the yard yesterday and picked up the saw, along with the steel cutting blade for another $90.

Then I went out into the yard and picked up six 24' sticks of 11 gauge 2" square tubing. I had them cut the tubes in half, so I didn't have so much hanging out the back of my truck. I noticed they were using a Evolution chop saw, with the multi-purpose blade they come with. So after they loaded up the steel in the back of my truck I commented to the guy how well that evolution saw seemed to cut. He said they are great saws, and that was a dull blade. They were also cutting 2 pieces at a time with it.

So after I get home I start looking for something I can cut :willy_nil It was hard to keep my self from cutting into a piece of that tubing I just bought, but I did not know any of the lengths I wanted yet. I found a piece of 1/4" steel plate and clamped it down. I also put the steel blade on, I'll save the other blade for cutting wood and aluminum. Pulled the trigger and lowered the blade onto the steel plate. It cut through much easier then a abrassive blade, and it was quieter as well. And not dealing with sparks and dust was really nice. About a minute after I made the cut I thought I should feel how warm the steel was... It was as cold as it was when I put it on the saw :bounce:

Later in the day I got the itch to play with it again, and cut a few pieces of some scrap 1.75" .120 wall tubing I had. I cut a 1/2" ring making both cuts as quickly as I could. Then removed my gloves and picked the pieces up to check if it was warm, still cold

Here are a couple pictures, sorry about the poor cell phone quality pics. I was to lazy to grab my camera :lol_hitti

After I finish modeling my work bench in solidworks I'll start cutting some steel and post up how it works. So far I am very happy with it, and would buy it again.

I picked up the 14" a couple of month ago. Great saw, way better than an abrasive. My only complaint with mine is the angle gauge is exact. I need to mess with it a little more.

I have the rage 3 as well. Still have the original multi purpose blade it came with although I've busted off two of the carbide teeth at this point. Still cuts steel fine. When the blade finally dies completely I'm going to try the Oshlun SBF-100052 blade. It's over twenty bucks cheaper than Evolution's own 10x52 steel blade so I figured I'd try that first and see how good they are.

By the way, my rage 3 came with the table rotated about a degree off from where it was supposed to be. I.E. all the detents on one side of zero were a degree bigger than they should be and all the detents on the other side of zero are a degree smaller than than they should be. Just something to check with yours before you try and make any important miter cuts.

Good buy!

Lately I've been jonesing for a better way to cut metal. The chop saw and bandsaw have entered the equation. Mainly I would like a good saw it for straight cuts - cutting stick of angle, channel or tube to length. I also do a decent amount of work with 2x4s so straight cuts would greatly benefit my projects. I have a cheap circular saw that I use with wood cutting blades and abrasive blades for my recent sheet metal cuts. It did the job, but it was only as good as my hand to keeping things jigged up and straight. It took a good bit of work out of me too. Not to mention the enormous mess.

I'm thinking the Rage 3 would be a huge improvement. Lowes has the Rage 3 10" miter for $199 ordered online and picked up in store. I would love to be able to apply my military discount to this too. 10% is nothing to sneeze at. Wonder if this is possible?

I want to put this on my Christmas list, but I don't think I can wait that long. My birthday has already passed. Wonder if I can have a Halloween present??

Anyway, you guys that have the Rage , how is it holding up? What projects have you cut? Seems like a sliding miter would fit my bill. The capacity for wood and metals seems like heaven.

I have one, I love it. No sparks, no heat, cuts great. Very handy to have if you do any light metal fab at all.

I'll say up front I've never heard of this saw until today and haven't done any research at all.

So - What features make it so good for metal? Why is it better than any other miter saw w/ a metal cutting blade?

I first saw Evolution brand about a year ago when I started doing a little more metal work. And from the reviews and reputation they are the bees knees for cutting metal. The blades are pricey but for the number of uses I'd put on it being a home hobby garage tinkerer I think I'd get decent life from the blades.

Evolution does have several types of blades if you're only using it for one material.

The Rage 3 thy list as "Professional" lineup. But they also have a Fury 3 8-1/4"which is the "DIY" version of the saw.

I'm thinking the Rage 3. First because I can order it from Lowes and hopefully apply my discount. Second the specs are more metal oriented. Has good capacity for cuts/material size.

Ah, there it is. 2500 rpm. Most 10" miter saws run anywhere from 3800-5000 rpm.

But DAMN....98dB??? I hope they measured that at working distance... 98dB at, like, 5 or 10 ft would be massively deafening when using the tool.

I think it's kinda strange they're not using a worm drive to step the speed down.

Yeah, the Rage 3 lists 2500rpm (the specs didn't list rpm for the Fury). Likely faster, plus a smaller blade. 98dB is loud. Hurt my ears just thinking about it. I always wear eyes and ears when I'm cutting anything anyway but maybe I'll have to bump up to higher quality protection. I would guess much of the noise is actual work when cutting. Least I'm really hoping so. Maybe the small mercy is the speed at which it cuts the material :)

I think I'm going to get the Rage 3. Showed the demo vids to DH last night, told him I wanted it on my Christmas list. I think I can hold out for 2mths. Just got to keep myself busy on non 2x4 and metal stick cutting things.

I did recently have to send mine in for warranty work, it simply quite working one day. They covered shipping both ways, very nice to work with. Got my saw back and cut a good size pile of steel this weekend with it.

Just picked up a second rage 3 saw today at Lowes, on closeout for $100 :shocking: I have no need for a second saw, but at that price I couldn't resist. The standard blade alone is normally $40.
