Hey guys..

I'm getting ready to build forms for the slab of my 40X40. I am building a free span steel truss building. There will be 5 trusses each sitting on the floor. 2X4 stringers with 1-1/2" board insulation then metal on the exterior.

My question is this...

What should the measurements of the slab be? How much over 40'?

The 2X4 is 1.5" thick then another 1.5" for the insulation. Should there be extra for the rat gaurd?

Not sure how much over 40X40 I should go?

Thanks in advance for the help!!

Nathan

There should be a drawing with the building that shows the basic 2D slab design, where the columns go, and how the anchor bolts are laid out. What you do in the 3rd dimension (depth) as far as grade beams, footings, or the thickness of the basic floor slab is another discussion. In other words you shouldn't have to calculate or guess at it. Contact the building manufacturer for this info.

On re-read, maybe you are stick building to prefab metal trusses...I would reference the truss design, then design the walls, the bottom plate, etc.

I'd guess a foot extra per wall.. or per overhang if no gutters.. so rain water doesn't wash out under the edge of the slab..

Unless it was very steeply sloped, that sounds like a very easy way to have constant water problems.

Here is what it should look like:

So you bought one of those tore down chicken barns. I've been looking at the 40x40 ones to...south central missouri here. Regardless how is the insulation? What condition is the metal in? Please post pictures!

The gentleman from Oshkosh is dead on. I left an extra 6" on the front of mine and as he said the rainwater travels down the siding, hits the concrete slab and eventually migrates through the base plate adhesive and into the interior floor. If the problem continues after I install a 5' overhang I will probably cut the excess of with my concrete saw

rebelranger, the insulation is ok. it's 1-1/2' thick and is by no means like new. The metal has surface rust but is structurally sound.
I did get alot of 2x4 lumber with the kit and it has seen better days. In fact, I will likely buy new lumber for the roof stringers.
At this point I am building forms for the pad and I may not start putting up trusses until spring. I will try to get pics posted as I progress.
I am thinking 3" extra width on each side (7" total) is what I will go with. 1.5" for the insulation and 1.5" for the purlin.
