Exhaust exhaust, what do you use

What do you use to route the exhaust from the tailpipe out of the garage when you work on a running vehicle. I have some industrial vaccum hose (3") but it is plastic, I wonder if it would melt?

There was just a pretty long debate on this exact subject a month or so ago. In fact, I believe I found out just how stupid I was by someone here...

If you are only running a car at idle, without a HOT exhaust, for a short time, it will work fine. Higher RPM, hot car just off the road, or doing something like running on a dyno, no. Short time idle to check something out...no problem. I used my shop vac hose many times.

Flame on!

I sent you a PM in regards to where you can get it, but I thought I would post here as well on my thoughts...

The "standard" exhaust temperature for a gasoline vehicle at idle is between 200-300 degrees F. Diesel tends to get hotter in the neighborhood of 4-600 degrees. (Sorry for those of you outside of USA, but I don't feel like doing the metric conversions, even though it would probably take less time to do it than write this sentence...)

Plastic hose is usually rated for only about 150 degrees (maybe 200) and will almost definitely melt when left on a vehicle that has been running for a while. Not recommended..(The hose is usually only about 1-1/2" in diameter as well and many vehicles have 2-3" exhaust pipes as standard)

Even with rubber hose that is rated for the proper temperatures (Crushproof Tubing is the only domestic manufacturer any more) it is recommended that you get a larger hose than you require OR use a tailpipe adapter that will allow some ambient air into the hose to lower the temperature.

Some of the hoses (like the flarelock design) can be screwed together without any adapters.

If anyone is interested in a group buy on garage exhaust hose and accessories, I would be happy to see what we can put together for you.

Best Regards,

Frank

In the past I used to use the aluminized, expandable/flex dryer tubing.

We sometimes use exhaust, with heavy gloves to bend PVC into weird offsets and bends out on the jobsites. I know it is off for this thread but is useful since the discussion is about exhaust and plastic hose.
