I am installing a exhaust fan in my garage. It's a "in wall" fan. I need to know what I need to wire this so that I may vary the speed of the fan. Right now it just runs on one speed. I want to be able to vary the speed. Any help would be apppreciated .

This will decrease the life of the fan but you could increase and descrease the power sent to the fan to make it spin slower or faster, something like a dimmer switch but for a fan would work for this

Is the fan direct drive or belt drive?

If its direct drive, you could wire up a fan speed control to the motor and vary the speed. Something like this: http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/items/1DGV2?Pid=search

Note fan speed controls can be hard on motors especially if you run them below 50% at all.

If the fan is a belt drive, then you will not be able use a fan speed control, as that motor will have an internal starting switch that kick out if you drop the RPM.

If the motor is not made to be multiple speed and a control for multiple speed is not available, I would not run it on a dimmer. A dimmer varies voltage and running a motor on reduced voltage will cause it to overheat.
