Exhaust Fan??

Well I am getting ready to start sheeting the walls and I started thinking, always dangerous, about whether it would be wise to install an exhaust fan like the one on the link.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

What is it going to be used for? If painting, with isocans, don't unless its explosion-proof.

The louvers on that fan aren't insulated which may be a problem during the winter. Remember that if you have an exhaust fan you also need an air inlet - whether that's an air intake louver, or just opening the garage door when using the fan. And as mentioned it's not explosion proof so it's not meant for pain fumes and such.

Sheathing the walls of what? If it's a chicken barn, then this fan is for you!

Depending on what you are venting and where you are venting it, there are many different and appropriate options to go for.

That's a heck of a fan. You could have the "whole house fan" effect right there. Only problem is all the junk it would **** in from outside.

Absolutely correct. The fan concentrates the vapors as it extracts them.

Explosion proof... didn't see that one coming. The garage is 32 x60 with 12' ceiling and I was thinking of using this to exhaust welding fumes and probably some vehicle exhaust vs them just lying in the shop and waiting to inhaled.

The sheathing will entail a plywood and then finally metal siding similar to what they use on pole buildings.

Those louver fans are also a pain to keep up with. They require a good bit of maintenance.

Is the garage heated?

For exhaust, fans will do a fine job if the vehicles are coming and going. If you are going to run engines for long periods of time inside, most fans won't be able to keep up and what you'd really need for this situation are exhaust ports that fit in to the wall or the garage doors.

Yes, garage has radiant heat.

Your idea about exhaust ports sounds the best for running vehicles in the shop.

Fans are easy.

Yes, garage has radiant heat.

For simple ventilation, you may consider a HRV. They work great, won't waste your heat in the winter, and some can be converted to an economizer (bring in cool air) like I did with mine for the summer: http://garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=337783

I haven't seen an explosion-proof one, though.

You could well paint a car with that. IOS are not the problem, it's thinners for explosion. Ain't but a pint of so used with a gallon, even a at and not all at once with most being sucked out. Put some filter material in front of it. That is a lot of fan, would really clear a building of that size, maybe 2 well.
Someone spray epoxy with no filters, we cleaned it and chopped the blades shorter after a bit of damage, I sheeted the shroud after the last pic. Making it smaller helped with heat loss.
