I have a 30x40 barn that was built in the early 1970s. Wood frame with board and batten outside. It has a 6/12 pitch with 5 V tin roofing. Its fatal flaw is it has no way to get ceilings higher then 8 feet and I need a lot higher to put in the two lifts I have planned. I am going to pour a 30x40 slab and tie into the existing structure with a new woodframe addition and metal roof. Since it is an existing older building it is nowhere near square or plumb.

Any advice on how to "marry" the old roofline with the new addition?

Thanks

Hi neighbor, I'm in SC. I'm not a construction person, but looks like you have 2 options: One, build the new building either in front or behind the existing one, install flashing to join th 2 roof lines.

Two, build the new building beside the old one and connect them with a hall way, taking care to provide for run off from the 2 roofs.

Looks like I will kick up the walls about 2 feet higher and raise the roofline 2 feet.

I would try to analyze why the existing building is 'listing'. It may be fairly easy to straighten it up a bit before starting the addition. I had an old garage that had no diagional bracing and was leaning quite a bit but was easy to jack back into verticle and then add bracing to keep it there.

Does this mean modifying the old building or the new will be 2' taller than the old. I would make the addition higher as it makes a stepped roofline that can be good looking.

It is not grossly out of square - but it is over 30 years old and no longer exactly plumb. No existing building I have ever added on to, repaired, or installed cabinets in has been plumb and square. It is actually very well built.

New one will be 2' taller.
