My first real question of what will undoubtedly be thousands:
We recently moved from a house with a large (eight car) attached garage. Our new place has a 2.5 car attached garage. We need to build more space asap, as we actually have eight cars.
Our house is on a 2+ acre lot, slightly rolling, but all very usable. Initially, I had planned to build a 24X56 shop/garage out beyond our stables, at the far edge of the property. There is a gated driveway to the stables, and continues past it to a good size flat area where I thought of building. To build such a shop in our region, would easily cost $100k.
Further thinking on this leads me to believe that scenario would be a bit inconvenient, especially in inclement weather. On the other hand, we are in Sonoma County, CA, with mostly superb climatic conditions. Additionally, that would result in having a couple cars living in the attached garage, with everything else out in the shop/car barn. Seems like it could be a hassle with tool organization, etc.
Consulting with my old pal; The Original Automobilist, he suggested we simply add on to the existing attached garage, and buy a shipping container for excess car / parts storage.
Architecturally, I think we could add on to the existing house/garage with aesthetically good results. While cost is not a huge factor, lower cost with favorable results is always good.
I'm interested in hearing opinions regarding the merits of both scenarios: detached, slightly remote shop building versus attached.
Thank you...
