I need to replace the hail guard on my old G&B visible gas pump. The original was constructed of expanded steel formed into a hoop and welded at the seam.

Is there any special consideration for rolling expanded steel? Is it even possible? I have no idea how they might have done it originally in the 1920s.

Thanks

If it’s flat expanded I would think it should roll just like a piece of flat sheet. If it’s the type that is expanded on its edge then that might pose a problem to roll.

The far side of crazy.. but sometimes Australia
Last time I tried it with the mesh like is in a security screen door the powered roller slipped because the peaks and troughs were just enough to create grief, the results were less than stellar. I was going to try sandwiching it in between two pieces of thin sheet but decided on a completely different idea in the end and never went back to that experiment.

Don't quote me, but I had a different experience with slightly heavier woven wire sheet and a buddy of mine tried cutting it on his work guillotine.

It seems it is possible that some of these sheets are made from higher tensile material and are more resistant when it comes to working them.

In my case the woven wire sheet damaged the guillotine blade due to its hardness.

So just be alert is my comment...

No experience rolling expanded metal. BUT.... I do work in a fab shop. I would find a round object of appropriate diameter and form the expanded metal around it by hand. I'm thinking that is how they did it back then. If it is some crazy heavy duty expanded metal then I would get the torch involved to persuade it.
