Specifically, a Matco mt1769. 83Yota has some used air tools for sale in the classifieds and he says they may or may not work. I am good friends with a local shop owner and the Matco dealer is very good to them and stops by weekly. I don't know if the impact is still technically within warranty(2 years) or not. Would your dealer help you out on an air tool that is out of warranty? Also, how do they know the tool is out of warranty? I'm not trying to screw anybody here, I just want to make sure I don't end up with a $50 paper weight.

EDIT: I forgot to add that I already emailed my friend whose family owns the shop. I'm still waiting for a reply.

All the ones I have delt with unless you bought it from them they need proof of purchase to know how much of the warranty is left. if it is out of warranty all of the trucks can send it it for repairs and most of them can tell you what the rebuild will cost on the spot.

OK, thanks for the info. So without a proof of purchase, I'm screwed for warranty. But, I can still try for a rebuild. What is typically wrong with an mt1769 that it would need repair? Is it typically an expensive rebuild?

I forget what # my 1/2" Matco gun was but it was more to have it rebuilt then it cost to buy a NEW Aircat.

Ouch. Maybe I'll reconsider purchasing any air tools used.:(

I forgot to add I USED this gun a lot. It sounded like a Maraca when you shook it. I used it working on My dad's semi and I bought it used from a guy at the Semi repair shop.

Are you normally a lucky person? My buddy has bought several Snap-on air tools and had them rebuilt it has never cost him over $80. I had a Blue Point D.A. that took a $15 part to fix. So some times it can be cost effective to buy used air tools.

on the cost side of repairs it just depends on what tool it is. I have had some that are 50-60 and some that are over 120. but I dont buy used air tools just because you dont know what your getting.

Well, the seller honestly states that the gun was either a repossessed or in for repair. I would bet that most of those guns were in for repair. So, figure $50 for the gun, and $80 to rebuild if I'm lucky. That still puts me up around what a confirmed working used one would cost on ebay. I think you're answering my question for me.

i wouldn't buy any used air tool if the seller does not know if it works or not. i knew if they worked or not BEFORE i traded for them. i would like a 3/8 but not without a warranty.

Well, maybe this is your chance to learn how to do you own air tool repair; I took apart a impact and a air ratchet.... not too hard! You might just learn something in the process! :)

If the original owner sent in the warranty card it will be on file with Matco. Otherwise you'll need the reciept to prove it's still within warranty.

That is absolutely fine with me as long as the parts to rebuild it aren't too crazy.

So if I could get the number off of the gun, I could possibly check to see if the warranty card were ever sent in and check to see if it is still under warranty even before I buy it? If I get the number, could you check that for me?

That MT1769 is an awesome impact! They are durable and very strong. The serial number called in to Matco (1800-433-7098) will tell them when it was shipped to the distributor and should give you an idea how old it is. If it shipped to the distributor less than two years ago it should still be under warrenty. Good luck.

All it takes is a call to Matco with the serial #.

Thanks. I've requested the serial number and will call Matco.

I've bought a few used air tools at sales, and they were definitely hit or miss. Some worked well, some didn't, and some were good for a while and died. If I buy a used air tool, I just figure on it needing totally rebuilt when I decide what I'll give for it.

I haven't had much luck on getting air tools warrantied. They usually work fine within the warranty period.
