I have a 110 mig welder that I use for various projects. currently it has a roll of .030 carbon steel welding wire. I need to weld some stainless steel exhaust pipe on my daily driver F150. is there any reason not to use this wire on stainless exhaust pipe? and does the welding gas matter? its probably the only stainless I will be welding for a while and don't want to buy an entire tank of different welding gas for a muffler replacement.

You can buy small spools of SS wire fairly cheaply. Or, as stated above, you can just weld it with the wire you have and deal with the rust. If you are using "MIG mix" AKA C25 it will work for both wires. Strait CO2 leaves a kind of crappy finish on stainless.

You can weld stainless with carbon wire, your welds will rust though.. Max

X2, for an exhaust I would just use what you have and not worry about some rusting. "Stainless" steel is still about 85-90% iron based, just like mild steel is about 98-99% iron. What makes stainless steel is the additional chromium added which is approx 10-15% for exhaust grades.
