Lumber is all about supply and demand. They have a crapload of 1x4x12 that they are trying to unload. You can bet the mill is cutting 1x4x8 at the moment, but they still need to unload the 1x4x12.

Weird
If the 12-footers are straight I would buy them and cut em down. If you are like me you can never have enough scrap laying around

Could be a different shipment, lumber prices change daily. Could also be shipping charges, different lengths of lumber fit on the truck better. Usually it's not that obvious though, I'd definitely go with the 12's.

Someone made a mistake in the computer and nobody putting on price tags is smart or experienced enough to catch it.

They'll figure it out when the computer kicks out an exception report or someone brings it to a manager's attention.

It's entirely possible that they know full well they'll sell more 8' boards, so why not make a bit more profit while we're at it. They also know that the majority of people won't ever figure out the price structure.

I always have uses for scrap lumber. The longer boards are sometimes a little better than the shorter boards, with fewer knots and kinks.

Given the mathematical steps in price they have mismarked the 3 lengths. Buy the 12's. They never sell longer for less no matter what (if it's like for like).

Don't use them for kindling. Pine has too much bad stuff that will mess up your chimney.

What do you guys burn in your neck of the woods?

In my area, Cedar is prefered but very hard to find. 90%+ of firewood is pine.

Don't really seem to have any problem with it.

Either this or they are going through a price change cycle and the prices are going up. When this happens, you'll find some sizes going up one day and others on another day.

Get 'em now while you can. (If the price on the tag is correct.) They will all be consistent eventually.

BTW - You don't want to burn this stuff in your fireplace! Pine=bad.

Most people will buy the 8' stuff.

Ever checked on the price of the 2' x 2' x 1/2" drywall "patch panel"? Costs more than a 4' x 8' sheet of 1/2" drywall.

Same goes for the 2' pieces of PVC at Home Depot, 5' pieces of PVC or black pipe at Menards or the pieces of copper pipe less than 10' long.

Pine has a lot of tar which tends to coat the firebox and the flue. Here's a link that talks about rhe subject.

We have a lot of oak trees that get cleared and offered for sale. Mesquite is also a nuisance tree that is often cleared. Also have lots of cedar but those often get cut for fence posts.

+1 many moons ago, six months after installing baseboard in my basement, I found the copper (3/4" type M) for almost 40% less upstate. Started to shake my head in disbelieve and an old timer home depot employee asked me what was wrong. I explain to him how much more I spent downstate and I attributed it to costs of doing business. He said "that has nothing to do with it. It is a matter of supply and demand. They will charge as much as the market will bear"

Prices vary - I see that a lot. Sometimes I'll mod a project plan right in the store because of weird prices. Lots of times the longer stuff is cheaper by the board foot. I've seen 2x8 lumber priced under 1$ from the same length 2x6 lumber. As noted, probably due to sales demand. BUT - try getting a load of "straight" 1x4x12s LOL. Better bring your gloves, you are going to sort for a while.

If you get it hot enough and keep it hot it's not a problem. For some of us pine is about the only option for firewood.

I bought a 4x8' sheet of "oak" plywood at Lowes for $2 more than they wanted for the same oak 4x4' sheet.

I've stopped trying to figure out the pricing of these places- Lowes, Home Depot- it's all about marketing and inventory, and what they are paying. Some mill wanted to dump the 12 footers, so they got a deal and passed it on. Doesn't matter to me. I buy what I can handle and cut it down.
