Hi guys!

A plumbing question.
Can a 3" sewer vent stack be left exposed in a mezzanine storage area where it will eventually go through the roof?

Getting ready to build our detached garage with scissor trusses and haven't spoke with the plumber yet, but the design has a bathroom under a mezzanine storage area on a interior wall and I'm curious as to how the vent stack will be handled.
I know he can move the stack to go up the exterior wall 5' away and out through the roof, but I don't want a 3" vent 18" from the roof edge.

I was wondering if the stack can be exposed in the mezzanine area?
I could just box it in, but would leaving it exposed work.
Thanks

One of my buildings in unincorporated rural area so no codes. But my plumbing guy cut square in exterior metal wall and installed plastic box from Oatey for their Sure-Vent filter cap that I understand is often used in RV building. It has a metal grill cove on outside of metal building. It is covered with the OSB panel on the inside of garage. Venting into open area above my mezzanine might have been ok, but I liked this completed solution better. Very affordable also.

As long as it's sealed passing through that space and terminates the required height above the roof line/away from windows then it should be fine. You just don't want sewer gas in your shop :)

If it ever does get damaged because of it's exposed location, you'll need to repair it, but unlike an unprotected unarmored electrical line, it's not likely to kill anyone anytime soon!

What's wrong with a vent 18" from the roof edge? That's my plan. The pipe comes up in an interior wall about 5' from the outside. Then over to just inside the outside wall in the floor of the mezzanine and up, exposed, to the ceiling and out the roof a few inches inside the wall. I didn't want the pipe in the middle of the mezzanine.

Sounds like we have a similar situation. I like your plan of it being next to wall.

I wonder if he can move it back to where it would normally be once he gets into the scissor truss attic area.
Up through floor at exterior wall, then once in the attic area, move it back to the 5 to 7' from edge location. Dog leg it, kinda.

The reason I didn't want the stack visible (at least as much as it would be near the roof edge) was more or less, for the esthetics reasons.
Being further in on the roof kinda helps hide the stack, even more when they are painted the roofing color.

I just like clean designs. :)

Going through the same situation sorta (making things look clean and sleek) with the garage (hobby workshop man cave/she shed) lighting.
I do not want "chain hanging" fixtures and I'm not real keen on the typical boxy alternatives. :-\
