What is the point of buying an impact gun with a 3" or 6" anvil rather than the standard anvil? Would it be better to just buy a standard anvil and an extension set? I only plan on buying one impact so I want to weigh out the options.

You lose torque through an extension because of the rattling between the square drives and twisting forces. I would bet that the extended anvil is harder than an extension and wont twist as much.

I would not buy an extended anvil gun, there are plenty of times where I wish my gun was actually shorter because you need to fit into tight spaces sometimes.
