Extending a Hip Roof

So, carpenters on board; how expensive is it to ‘stretch’ a hip roof?

Our ‘fixer upper’ has a full hip roof over the main part of the house and an ‘extended’, non-attic space roof over a couple of ‘additions’. One I think is the former garage and the other looks sorta like they closed in a porch.

The bathrooms are in the ‘garage’ section and the roofline tapers down quite a bit – since we are opening all the walls (inside and out) and re-doing some of the roof, I’m wondering what the additional work would be.

We have a GC in the family that’s helping us with the remodel and of course I’ll run it by him, but I wanted to get some opinions from the forum as well.

I've seen a flat section on a roof like that before, but I'd avoid that type of roof framing if I could. You might just frame up to a new higher ridge.

BTW, if it's a full hip roof then your .pdf would be a cross section, right?

The flat top is a problem for sure.
You could easily have new roof trusses built to replace the two roof pitches with a single truss that either has two different roof pitches, or moves the center as you have diagrammed. But you want a peak somewhere, not a flat top

i have an addition (closed in carport) with a flat roof. If I had the money i would extend the real roof out over it. Its hard to stop the leaks once they start!

does the carport/addition run the length of the house? Any pictures? (To get a better idea)

I would call a truss co. There engineer will design what you need, and it will pass your local codes. The flat roof is out, unless you live where it doen't rain much.

He can't use trusses. It's a full hip roof. Has a lot of this going on:

What he wants to do is widen the ridge part to 2 ridges. As I said originally, I wouldn't take that route.

If it were me, and I'm following your description and diagram correctly-

Guess I'm not being very clear...

No flat area, that's just the direction I want to extend the roof.

I've attached another .pdf of a top view showing the roof going from a full hip square to a full hip rectangle.

Mark, that can be done but you will have to remove all of the roof and start over. K'Ledge, has the easy answer.

Got it now. The plan view helps a lot. True that you can extend your existing ridge and frame out the hip a few feet over. Since I realize that the existing roof is impacting your ceilings, little d is right, you will need to tear it down to the walls on the end you want to build out. Now, it seems pretty straight forward. You will have to find a bearing point near the end of your new extended ridge.

With a permit, they most likely won't let you use any of the old lumber. Too bad because it's already cut.
