I've got a four stall pole barn the has a 17' roof at the highest point. The ends have posts at the center the other bays have trusses in the center. I want to add a bay to the existing barn on one side, and if it's easy enough I'll add another on the other side.

The first extension I want to try wont have a sheet metal wall it's mostly a roofed area for storing a trailer. The 6x6 posts are 17' at the peak and 13' at the front end and the bays are 12'X36'.

The question is, with 6X6 posts 13 and 17 feet, how deep would I put the posts in the ground, and how? Do I pour a foot of cement in the hole and let it cure before putting the post on it and then pouring 2 feet of cement up the pole and then back fill with soil? Even though it's just an extension, Im going to have to look at it for the rest of my life and I want to be proud of my work. Even if no one can see it, I want to know that I did things the best way.

All of your help is welcome.

Metal or wood trusses?

Dont know the frost line there but I am guessing 4' deep and you would be fine.

As far as the concrete around the pole, you will have to decide for yourself. I chose to put a bag of concrete in the hole and let it cure before putting the posts. Then backfill and pack a little at a time. No concrete around the pole for me.

...on my polebarn, they planted the poles 3-4' deep and placed a concrete pad (pre-made) into the bottom of the hole, then set pole and backfilled with soil. This was a well known polebarn builder in this area, no problems with it done this way.
will your poles be treated?...

All depends on code in your area (if following code that is)
My barn went up last fall, 2ft diameter holes, 48" deep, then poured 6" of concrete in each hole. Let it set for a week, then set the poles and filled in with sand. Can put concrete in holes if you want, but once its tied into the existing structure its not going to move if you packed the soil into the holes.

My barn is 40x64 with 14' walls, and it held up just fine this winter with 50+ mph winds a lot of the time!
