I amhaving issues with the extension cords that have the clear lighted ends. I had purchased (2) 12ga x 10' cords to use with a portable a/c. With one cord the female end gets hot so I swapped it with the other and it did not

Are there quality issues with the lighted cord vs the cords with the moulded ends?

If both are the same model, yet one reaches significantly higher temps that the other when experiencing the same load, I'd say you have your answer.

Heat is caused by resistance. One of your cords may have less contact with the plug than the other. Test how easily the plug inserts & removes to see if there is a difference. If one is slightly looser apply a "slight" twist to the prongs on the plug for a tighter contact. If that doesn't help cut the end off & replace it.

I had 2-50' cords with the lighted ends, yellow in color.
Both were limp and had soft outer insulation that would rip easily
Within 6 months both failed at the female connectors.

Cord ends come in three classes, they are Cheap & Crappy, "good" and " top of the line". For Commercial use don't buy the cheap stuff.

I've never really seen the use for the lighted ends, other than on a block heater cord in the frozen north when its pitch black outside and you're trying to find the end so you can (un)plug in your vehicle. Any other cord I have with them I eventually cut them off and replace it with a good Hubbell or equivalent cord end.

I have three US wire and cable 12/3 cords with lighted ends. Two 100's and a 25', all have been in use for quite a while with no issues.

The lighted end wasn't a selling point, but it has posed no problems, including running the two 100's together to use tools like a Corded chainsaw.

Maybe you just got some bad ones or they are worn out. I can't see why a lighted end would inherently pose an issue unless the led itself is getting warm

I know you don’t want to hear it but the correct answer is to install a code compliant outlet close enough to the AC that no extension cord is needed.

Just to be clear it is a code violation to use an extension cord on a regular basis.

I am glad you noticed the faulty cord before your house burned down.
