Extension cord storage/organization

Now that Irma is gone, I can put the generator and extension cords away.

Th small 25ft or less cords are easy and I found some holders at Walmart for .93, these will also work for Christmas light extension cords.

I also have two 100 foot heavy duty (10 or 12 gauge) cords which are two heavy for the little holders.

Any ideas on how to secure these so they can be put into a drawer or out of the way.

Easy access and easy to put away.

I wrap mine up like a climbing rope and hang them on a gook in the shed. What ever you do dont be one of those people who wraps them around your arm/hand, that puts so many twists in them and they become a knot in a short amount of time.

LOL must be a NY thing. I have a couple 100' 12 GA cords. Always wrap them like a climbing cord. Works great. Just need to unravel the whole thing when using them.

I do about 1/2 the length but same idea.

Although you could not put them in a drawer it does make them easier to look after.

No kinks, no extra space required.

And 90% if the time you just pull off what you need and leave the rest on.

If you do that please make sure the coiled lead does not get hot as I have seen many a fire start that way.

This is why I like my bucket trick, the loose cord does not get hot like a coiled cord.

I wrap mine around left over spools that BX, Loomex or Data cabling come wrapped around. I loop the male end through a whole in the side of the spool with 5-6' so I can place the spool near the outlet. The female end is wrapped around the spool and just pull off what l need. When done wrap the female end onto spool and then roll up the 5-6' of the male end around the spool and place on a piece of 3/4" conduit stub that I use for a hanger.

Its hard to explain. But you basicly lay the cord over your hand in opposite direction. Kinda like if you would grab the top and bottom of the loop of cord. Then wrap like a rope.

But this thread does remind me of a story from a good electrical contractor friend: He was asked to temporarily wire in a high wattage heater for use during construction of a commercial building.

Load required 4ga cable. He already had a 200' spool in the compound for an upcoming job. The temp heater only needed about a 25' run of cable, but he didn't want to cut it off of his 200' spool. Long story short - he left most of the cable on the spool. Despite the cable being rated correctly, it couldn't radiate heat properly while on the spool. Melted the jacket and ruined the whole length of cable. Luckily it didn't catch fire.

When I was an apprentice carpenter I got my *** chewed for wrapping a cord around my arm. Plug the ends of the cord together, hold cord in one hand, drape cord over hand with other, hang it from a large rubber coated hook.

Takes half the time and always comes out nice.

+1 although in my experience as a audio tech, the lighting guys don't do this.

Good idea! I would suggest that you put some rubber grommets where the cord comes out of the bucket to protect the cord.

Doing lighting and audio, both were done using the over/under method. Start getting 100' cam lock cables and those were done the best you can.

I like these a lot and they are like 80 cents so I buy a bunch and the come in small, medium, and large which is nice for garden hoses

The fancy loops and all the other stuff is fine if you do it by yourself however when you have employees it’s a nightmare to try to teach them how to do the fancy extension cord tying and wrapping so I find the plastic clamps easier

Only problem is with the plastic clamps when you have employees usually lose a bunch of them because nitwits don’t know where to put them when they use the cord

For the time being, I simply hang them up using motorcycle (quick-release) tie-down straps. I have plenty of those. Worst case scenario: I need all my tie downs - it's not going to be a problem for my empty garage to have cords arranged on the floor for a few days.

I use some of those steel shelf brackets that are made for hanging closet rods. Slip a piece of corrugated hose over the bracket so there aren't any sharp edges.

And a cheap orange hand reel for a 100 footer that needs to stay mobile.

25' and less and coiled by hand and hung on a hook designed for holding a bicycle.
