Not sure if I can explain what I am trying to accomplish. The breaker box is flush mounted to the stud. I am now putting 3/4 1 X 6 up on the walls. Can I go over the lip of the breaker box and mount the cover on top of the 1 X 6 with longer screws or does the wood between cause or risk a fire hazard? They don't make an extension to bring the door out further?

Ayuh,.... I think there's codes against that, 'n I doubt there's box extensions,....
Put the 1x6s up to the cover, allowin' for it's removal, 'n hang a picture or mirror over the thing,....
Or pull the box out, 'n remount it,...

No extension rings for panels.
Cover needs to seat on panel.
Youre gonna have to move the panel out further to the spot where the finished wall surface will be.

A cover/ recess can conflict with code quite easily, some may consider it splitting hairs, but can conflict with the fairly strict rules on what can be in the space where the panel is. All it takes is a inspector who reads the rules from a narrow viewpoint. If the panel has the flexibility to move flush with the new finished surface, that is the best bet.

Cut power to the panel and move it out. Probably 4 screws, it'll take about ten minutes. Might have to whack a little sheetrock to undo the conduit clamps on the service feed.
In your case if it's sheetrocked it doesn't matter...just cut it...you're putting paneling up and won't have to fix it anyway.

This is exactly why I enjoy this forum. I am not the smartest guy however I can follow instruction. I loosened four screws shimmed the box out 3/4" and am good to go. All I had was insulation, no drywall or wall covering.
