Hi all, new here. Just bought my first house not too long ago and am aching for more garage space. Right now I have a 20x22x8.5' block garage. Looking to add a wood framed work room and tall bay out the back side of the garage.

Going to have a small wood working, light/medium duty metal working area, and auto bays set up in the garage. The building, or part of it, will be heated. It Will all be insulated.

Not sure what the best way to connect the wood expansion to the block walls or if it is even a good idea due to difference in dimensional expansion. Should I just go with block for the extension as well? Trying to keep cost down on the garage itself so I can spend more on things that go in it.

Any thoughts or ideas are welcome! Thanks in advance for the input!

Your area/location (in your profile) would help a lot.

Adding permanent structure is something that's going to have to have plans sent thru building and zoning for your area. Whether they inspect or not is one thing but typically the jurisdiction wants to be sure they are assessing the proper amount of property taxes ;)

Best is to replicate the same foundation as what you already have, digging a small test hole will tell you.

You can save quite a bit if you learn, plan, buy materials, and do the work yourself rather than paying someone else's labor and profit margin.

Welcome to the GJ! I'm with matt_i on the foundation especially if you are in a location that gets frost. If so, you want both structures to move together. Whether the existing structure is frost protected or 'floats', you want the same for the addition. Once that is achieved you can connect the old to the new with no concerns. Good luck.

Located in Sylvania / Toledo Oh. We definitely get frost here lol. Matt I, you are not too far from me.

I would really like to stick with timber as I am more than comfortable enough to do that on my own. Brick would take more time and work than I am able to put in. Dimensional change with atmospheric shift is the only thing I am worried about.

Existing structure is a Block garage on a 4" slab with footer. Footer and slab for the addition is not an issue.

I am also considering adding another building but I would like to conserve yard space and entry to the back yard would be an issue.

The extension would be a pass-through to my current garage.

Attached are some rough drafts of what I am looking to do.
