Extension storage question....

I have a whole boatload of extensions and really hate them just rolling round in the drawers....
So what's the best way to organize them and look descent even without the storage trays since I ain't got none?
Was thinking bout just snapping them on some rails...
What y'all think?

I just line them up front to back in the drawer, that way they can't roll when you open and close the drawers. I've seen where guys mount a magnetic strip along the back and use that to keep the extensions from moving.

I have my excess extentions zip tied together in a spare drawer. My other useful extensions if short enough go in between sockets on my trays. Other ones go parallel with the slides so they don't roll.

I throw all the little ones in rubbermaid trays in a drawer...the other longer ones just go long side forward/back so they don't roll around when opening and closing the drawer.

Buy more tools.

If your tools are rolling around in a drawer you don't have enough tools

When I was organizing my socket stuff I tried to find "clips" like these but in extension sizes.

I never had any luck, I could only find them in broom sizes.

That would have been my plan though, I just may not have looked in the right place. I built my own storage tray with rails screwed to a sheet of MDF, these could have screwed to the same MDF. That was my thinkin' anyways!

Mine 'roll' around in both my box at work and in the trailer. Although the box in the trailer doesn't have as many tools. I found lining them up perpendicular to the drawer slide and 'boxing' or pinning them in works well. Rails would be sweet but I have 2 many extensions of differnt length, if they were on a rail I would need a lot of space to put them. I know it not what your looking for but it's an idea.

Just a small cheap rectangle shaped plastic storage bin, great for punches, extensions, etc. many different sizes and shapes to choose from out and about.

Snap on used them in their KRA63 and KRA66 pegboard top boxes. Mcmaster and the like carry them in all sizes. They are in "pegboard clips" then filter down to what you like.

I had to use a drawer for all my ratchets and extensions. My long extensions are in my socket drawer and my impact extensions are in the impact drawer. This drawer is ratchets, adapters, and chrome extensions.

I think the extension clips are great if you don't have a lot. If you have a lot of extensions it will be hard to have enough room for the required clips.

Ya that's true... I got a **** load of extensions and a lot of them are really long and I got a lot of them in all 3 sizes also....
So I'm really leaning towards just clipping them on some metal rails for each size and then that way they won't move around or roll around either.
Then I can just use 1 whole drawer just for extensions alone

I found a bottom of an evaporust jug I cut. Perfect for 6" and smaller extensions.

I use the HF socket rails and just interchanged clips. I have it laid on the side. I can just lift the end of it straight up and it will pull off the clip.

Your wife has a say about what is in your tool box? Do you you get a say for what's in her shoe rack?

Heck my wife doesn't get a say in how many boxes I buy... I buy tools almost every weekend. All she ever says is "did you find any good stuff?" and if it's strange enough, she will sometimes ask to take pics. (She's a photographer) I don't think she'd ever consider questioning what I buy (Unless it's a boat...).

The reason for having this stuff in the top of a service cart is so you don't have to open 3 drawers to perform every function, one for the socket, one for the ratchet etc.

That's how I organise my toolbox drawers.... I keep everything by
drive size not by tool type. I have 5 separate drawers for my socket sets.

1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 3/4" and 1/2" Impact.

So all ratchets, sockets, extensions, swivels, crows feet, etc are all in the
same drawer for their respective drive size... Took me a while to organise
but now works so much better than any other system I've tried.

It's obvious if you need a 3/8" drive 14mm socket, 99.9% of the time
you'll need a 3/8" ratchet and extension to go with it. Just open one
drawer and it's all there.

Yes, there are a lot of variations to this theme and I been working on it a while, using simple boxes and cans to get it right as well as moving less used or in some cases never used pieces off and out of the way.

I have 2 main tool pools to some extent in different locations and one serves 2 bays including hoist. I am going to make some minor changes to the top of the box but have really stripped including a whole layer of chrome sockets to a drawer. I want to make a staggered tier for sockets yet for this location and others with their back against the wall.
The tools are in an island of sorts near the hoist and the rotary is perfect. I tried a lot of stuff, this is about as good as it gets.
I got some minor changes yet but they wont make me time or money but the ergonomics of my stuff is very smooth, even if you never worked there its easy to figure your way around in a couple minutes if you have any shop sense.

We since got rid of the wrench peg on the island, it took one each side and consolidated it with a rotary. All the sockets, the wrenches pliers and drivers are on rotary and the tool cart has a set of metric combo wrenches, hammers, a few general tools and on the one end all the drive stuff.

I use magnetic strips, and hold them to the top of the lid of the box.

Top and I use a whole draw 30 inchs I think for extensions 1/4,1/2,3/4 and 1inch inch ratchets, no room to roll about

I just lay them between my socket rails with my ratchets. sometimes I will clip them together with like sizes so they store without piling up
