Extensions storage

I'm changing the way I store my sockets and need some ideas for my extensions so they aren't just rolling around. Right now I have Lock-a-socket trays and the extensions are in between the rows of sockets on each tray. The new system I'm looking at wont allow for similar storage

Any pictures or ideas would be great.

I load the stubbies on my socket boards.

For the longer ones I use the Dollar Store's long utensil bins meant for kitchen dwrs.

If you have a lot of extensions, then one for each drive size. If not, toss the 6" or 9" and ups all in one bin to keep them from rolling around.

It's the freakin' Dollar Store. LOLOL.
But they work like a champ.

I have the Snap-on KRA 63 as a top box, so I have the most frequently used ones mounted with clips under the lid.

I actually have one out of my systainer I can use. It was just sitting on the shelf collecting dust. I might get a magnet panel too for some of my other loose stuff.

Thanks for the suggestions

For extensions I simply took a 1" wide piece of wood and rabbetted grooves in it to hold the different extensions. I made the rabbetts different widths to accomodate 3/8, 1/2, etc. extensions. Works great, cost zero. But I do like the other suggestions already given. The socket rail on its side is very good.....

Stick them together until its to long and throw them in the top drawer with the sockets and ratchets in my cart I keep them in the screw driver holes on the sides

I made a divider out of 1 1/2" alum. angle in my socket drawer, worked out pretty nice.

I used to use a socket rail but now I use a magnet strip along the side of the drawer, it is about 2 inches wide so I can stack the less used ones in the back I found I can fit more extensions this way.

I use the dollar store idea. To save space I use a single bin that's about 3 inches wide, 2 inches tall and about 16 inches long. Its in the same section as the silverware trays. I just drop the extensions in there and it keeps them from rolling around. Sits in the same spot as the example with the blue tray. I have several and they will lock to each other if you like with a lip that overlaps the bin next to the other. I think they are made by Rubbermaid.

Another vote for the dollar store drawer organizers. I have a few different sizes that I use for extensions, u-joints, adapters, etc.

They came with the box when I bought it new off the truck in the 90´s, but can buy them by the bag from your Snap-on dealer.

i know i might be pushing my luck, but can you somehow get me the p/n for those. Its that i have to track them down and they usually dont have time to look for stuff for us. If i have the p/n he will just pull it right out.

They came included with the box in 1996, if I stumble upon the pn I'll DM it to you.

I pack mine so tight in the drawer that they don't have room to roll. Then I can see them easily without trying to dig through a dollar store bin and I don't have to disconnect them from a rail every time either. The magnet would be the only other option for me.

I use VIM Magnetic strips. Put on for the drive side to latch into on the side of the drawer and use the others as dividers. Works well. pricy though, takes up some extra real estate too, but lets me find them a little quicker. just like the socket trays. Take up a lot of room, but fastest for finding proper socket. For me at least.

BTW, you're not short on sockets. Most of the ones in my drawer I rarely use. The 12pts will disappear except for a few once I need more room. The biggest downside of them other than space is they help you loose other tools. You forget where you set the 13mm 6pt so you just grab the 12 and never take the time to find the 6pt. Later on you never do recover it. I use enough of the 12pts that I'd need them available to me, but I think I'd just put them in a cabinet in the shop somewhere instead. Many people have excess sockets too. Enough auto techs just have up to 19mm. I do heavy equipment, trucks and farm stuff, so you run into a lot of interesting things.

Mine are in a silverware organizer. I can keep most of them seperated in a simple small one and still have room for all of my ratchets in the drawer.

I use a tool holder bar magnet laid sideways in the drawer in a similar fashion as the socket rails above.

like this. http://www.magnet-tool.com/magnetic_tool_holder.html

I just drop the extension in the drawer and push it up against the magnet. quicker than the socket rails.

Excellent! I had heard all of these ideas but this one before. For me this is the most efficient. Extensions will stay in place but easily and quickly removed. Just looked on HF and magnetic strips are on sale for $4.99. I will be going by tomorrow and checking them out.

Thanks, Tom
