Thanks for that. I don't think I'm creating a "habitable space" in this situation.
What I have is a 2-car attached garage with two roll-up doors and a pole in the middle. The man door into the house is on the right side and the left half is slightly deeper with the furnace and water heater on the left half back. I currently use the left half for metalworks including a lathe and welding but that's not good for livability of the right half what with the noise, smells and metal shavings migrating over there. Not to mention I'd like to keep the dangerous tools locked away better and protect them from temperature extremes. I'm building a wall right down the middle, absorbing the post. The wall will have a man door door at the end at 90 degree to the existing door into the house. The new space will be air conditioned so I can also use it for a home office and move my 3D printing and computer in there to get it out of the main house. The bay will technically remain usable as a garage, at least if I moved all my things out.
It's a small space but the wall won't make it any smaller and in fact will give me more hanging space. So it's
Better safety for the kids from chemicals, power tools and guns,
Less noise,
Smoke and chip containment,
Increasing working comfort and usable season for working,
Free up a corner in the main house from my computer and printer,
Allow 3D printing overnight without bothering anyone,
Ability to do work calls from home while other people are home (my work is largely in the evenings),
Maybe slightly more security against things being stolen
