Looking for some suggestions on fixtures for the exterior of my new garage.

My plans are for a fixture on either side and between the garage doors and either above or to the side of the man door.

I'm also planning a flood light near the peak to illuminate the area in front of the doors.

Suggestions / pictures welcome!

Thanks,
Tom

I did a similar lighting plan on my building. I went with Lowe's brand junk carriage lights, looking forward to replacing them in a few years.

What other lights do you have in the yard?

Think about overall property lighting and need ... how you will use the space

I'm not really a fan of typical wall lights for general lighting -- they throw the light all over the place (glare). They work for temporary extra light when not too bright ... in tandem with others. Wall lights are remnants of a style when people used candles and gas .. and light bulbs were dim.

Small down lights work well around doors -- they provide enough light for the task w/o glare.

I think you will find having down lights -- or an over head "garage style" light over the large doors will work better.

Hi spots are a necessary evil -- get a good one with some control if you want to work under it.

see the wall light guide from BEGA

+1 on not having open lights. Illuminate the stuff you want to see, not your own face. And yes, a gable floodlight is kind of a necessary evil if you can't go with any outdoor post-mounted lights. How far away from the building do you really need to illuminate?

Garage is about 70' from the house. I would like a light at the man door so I can see as I approach. I don't know whether to mount it beside or above the door.

From a wiring standpoint it would be easier to mount off to either side of the door.

All of the walls are open inside - at the moment. Insulation and sheet rock going in soon.

I think I'm going to go with a flood light above each garage door and bag the "decorative" lights between and at the ends of the doors. No need for anything fancy, just functional. Like for loading / unloading trailer at night.

Took a tour through the lighting section of Home Depot today - don't like any of the fixtures there.
