My exterior lights are on 3-way switches, and I'd like to install a timer on them to turn lights on/off when I'm not home. I'm looking for a quick tutorial on how this works.
There is a switch by my front door and has three wires attached to it (there is no ground wire attached). The top of the switch has a brown wire on both sides (directly opposite one another) and these are both hot with 120v or so. The bottom of the switch has a single red wire with a dark screw to the switch and this is also hot with 120v.
The switch in the garage has 2 hot brown wires as well and a single yellow wire that is not hot. The box does have a bundle of white wires that are neutrals but it is not attached to the switch.
The timer is intended to go in the garage but I don't know if that is the line or the load side and which wire is the traveler?
