I am thinking about running exterior steps to my bonus room above my garage that I am building this summer.

Does anybody have any pictures of example exterior steps.

10' sidewalls.

Thanks,

Check mine out in my photo. I spliced two sets of Peak metal risers together for 17 risers. You can get these at home depot, total cost was about $200.00 and then welding including sleeve inserts at the splice. far better than any wood ones for sure. Passed building code since I put stations on the out side for no flex or bounce. You can order custom lengths through specialty fabricator companies, expect to pay $600-$800 though. Use a decks stair rise calculator program from the net, they are a big help. I can post additional photos if you need for mine. Hope this helps.

I used to live above my shop at my parents house decades ago and had a similar configuration to what has been posted by Super D. The only thing to be cognizant of in cold weather climates is snow accumulation. I would leave my snow shovel up stairs and shovel my out in the morning. Don't know how frequently you will be accessing this space, but I wish I would have included some form of weather protection over mine to minimize the snow accumulation. My place was over 23' in the air, so I had allot of steps to shovel before going to work in the morning.

That is somewhat of an issue. 10' up, so about 17 steps. Access will be at least weekly I would think.

Nice! I plan to do something very similar except I only need to raise about 8' above grade (garage is built on a slope) and I want to make the deck area up top a little larger to accomodate a BBQ. My bonus room is slated for an apartment one day but is currently unfinished.

Code also says that you need a landing to break the stair run if it exceeds 12 feet in rise - that is, if you are concerned with code. I have a second story on my garage (10' ceilings) and the stair rise was a gnat under 12'.

Some codes will require a landing and some will require a roof.
