Just started framing my barn / garage build this week and should be ready to spray some primer this weekend. I am leaving my rafter tails, and roof deck overahangs and lean-to roof structure open to below and will need to prime and paint the bare wood in those areas. Final siding will be LP Smart Lap and I am planning to paint my overhead garage door as well so the final paint will be 100% latex from Sherwin Williams or PPG.

That said, what is a good primer to use that will spray well on all of this open wood? I want to get it sprayed this weekend before the roof and windows get installed to minimize the masking.

Thanks!

I have used boiled linseed oil followed by Sherwin Williams oil base primer with good results.

I have read that clear water-borne bonding primer, followed by pigmented acrylic primer is a better method. Oil based primer is not elastic and will eventually crack.

It's best to start with something with no pigment for best penetration.

Talk to the paint store. Ask them which primer to use. It's going to be a bare wood primer. Sherwin-Williams / valspar same company great products as well as Benjamin moore. Those two companies really are the best. As far as ability to get easily and value for what you get. You're also paying for the paint store to give you good recommendations and counsel.
