exterior recessed box

Hey,

I upgrading my meter panel (mounted outside, recessed in to the wall) and am adding a NEMA 14-50 receptacle in the wall below it, I want to make sure I got the right stuff:

4" x 2 1/8" square box mounted to the stud, offset so it will be flush with the stucco

My main concern is am I using the right size box? Also, is there a deeper box than 2 1/8" to give more room to for the wires?

Yes to box: just find a 4S deep box. They come in at least 3" deep.

I would use a 4 square box and ring, hate those boxes the OP linked to almost as much as handy boxes.

Zeke - the only 4S deep boxes I can find has the threaded tabs on the corners, the weatherproof cover/14-50 holes wouldn't line up to that, I can fab something up or take a walk around HD to see if there are adapter plates unless you know a better way?

Bretny/Mmia23 - I am concerned about water leakage and properly papering/flashing around everything, the old meter box was recessed into the wall and there are 2 other receptacles on the exterior of the house that have been built into the stucco since the 1950s and it doesn't seem to have had any issues. Any suggestion on how to keep the water out?

That is the difference between a handy box and a standard square. You need a cover anyway for the recep and the in-use cover so you have screw holes where you need them.

4" square with mud ring is the pro way. Those boxes in the first post scream handy man.

4"square boxes come in 1 1/2 and 2 1/8. If that's not deep enough use the 1 1/2 and add an 1 1/2 extension ring.

You select a mud ring to match the thickness of the stucco. The 4" box is set flush with the stud and the mud ring will be flush with the finished surface.

Is the enclosure recessed into the wall or surface mounted?

It makes a difference, other questions may follow which will also make a difference in how you write it up.

What about the hole the wires goes through to get inside the surface mount box, how would i keep water from getting into that? Or the screw holes needed to mount the box?

Sealant. Duct seal, polyurethane-based stuff (i.e. sikaflex), etc. I always put a drain hole in outdoor installations.

As you say, a 4x4x2-1/8" box is quite small.... I'd probably use something like this instead:

3", 3 1/2 and 4" boxes are available as well. Probalby not at the borg, but they're made.
