Hi, all. Need some opinions on repairing a hole in an external CBS wall. A friend of mine had to have a plumbing repair that necessitated opening up the wall all the way through. The size is 22” x 9“ and is right at the foundation. Need to make sure it’s structurally sound, waterproof, and secure. I was thinking maybe fitting in some rebar and pouring in some concrete, but then that would encase the pipe and make additional repairs difficult. Perhaps fitting in some half-height blocks and then setting it all in with concrete will make it stable, but still allow for it to be broken out if another repair is needed.

I tend to overthink things, so if any of you have done this before or know the correct/best way to do it, I’m all ears.

I would cut up a couple cement blocks with a masonry wheel on an angle grinder. Maybe even pack in some of the rubble that was smashed out. Trim and stack them in with a modest amount of mortar on the edges so it just sticks together.

After that sets, trowel a top coat of mortar over the whole thing.

When my Dad used to do stucco... watered down white glue often got used to increase bonding between old and new. YMMV.
