Hi All,
I've done some searching on this topic and I'm having trouble getting to a answer I can totally wrap my head around. I was hoping you guys can help me out. A bit of background pertinent to the topic: I can do basic electrical. I wired the garage in question myself. I understand circuits, receptacles, switches, devices, etc. I am NOT a expert, hence the reason I need some help.
I recently purchased a Pro Fusion model HA24-75MB forced air heater for my garage. Basic wiring is simple enough. 40A breaker, 8/2 wire from the panel directly to the device. No big deal. But the manual says it's "compatible with a 240V line voltage single pole wall thermostat." I'd love to install something programmable so I can set it to run on a schedule, but the instructions have me confused. As I understand it, a single pole thermostat generally just acts as a thermostatically controlled switch. However, the way I'm reading the wiring diagram, you're not connecting the thermostat in line with the main AC power coming to the unit. It looks like it connects to a separate terminal on the device. Additionally, the manual says "the lead wire of external temperature control must have a minimum gauge of 16 AWG." So how is this thing supposed to work? There's no way 16 AWG is going to carry 30 some-odd amps, and as I mentioned previously it doesn't look like the thermostat is supposed to be wired in line with the main AC, so that leads me to believe the thermostat is supposed to work like a traditional thermostat on a furnace. But, if the unit it smart enough to run that way, why does the thermostat need to be line voltage at all? Why not just run a regular low-volt, heat pump type home thermostat? Can you guys help me understand what I'm not seeing here?
