Here's a couple of photos of my extra deep 2 car garage. It's also a bit wider than a regular 2 car. The dimensions are 26 x 35. The lawn looks a bit better now, but we still need to landscape. I posted a link to my photo album in this thread:

Extra deep garage is a good ideal because you will probably want to put a work bench at the end and still be able to pull a car in and close the door; gives plenty of room all around.

My garage is 40' deep, and no matter how much room you have in a garage, you will always manage to fill it to capacity. Today, I had to make room to get my newest collector car inside, and when I was done, it just about took a shoe horn to close the garage door when everything was back inside. :lol_hitti In theory, I have room for 8 cars in my garages. Right now, there are 3 inside, and there is no more room. I will be divesting myself of 40 years of collecting junk over the next few months.
In the picture, you can see one of my Corvair's that is a work in progress (very slow progress at that). When I put the 1963 Chrysler in the garage, there is 1" between it and the Corvair, and the door clears the back bumper by about 2". I haven't measured the car, but my guess is that it is at least 21' long!!!! :shocking:

Here's what the inside looked like 1 year ago. This was taken a year after the garage was completed. It has even more junk in it now.

Okay...I have to ask...and not to hijack the thread, but why did you build the sidewalls so short.? It looks like you lose major amount of room that way.

I added onto the house on the garage side, and since there was the slope of the roof to contend with, I just followed the original roof line. The side wall is about 54" to the roof joists. I was going for maximum amount of room, and I ended the roof at a level that I knew would be difficult for someone to jump up on, but low enough to give me the interior space that I wanted. My original garage is 26' X 38' and the one in the picture is 22' X 38' if I remember correctly. If I were to get all the "junk" out of both garages, I can get 8 cars into them both comfortably.

What kind of sheeting is on the concrete?

Not sure which picture you are referring to.. My floor is treated with a poly concrete floor coating that was put on the same day the floor was poured.

Probably one of my dreams of what I consider to be the ultimate workabe shop for me would be something very similar to yours. I love the thought of having shitloads of workspace around the front of the cars. To me I would have wall to wall overhead cabinets and designated spaces for the welder, toolbox at the head wall if not a Ushape in the workarea. Kinda like a little cave.....

That's what I thought, too. It looked great on paper. However, now that I have it in 3D and have been using it for 2 years, I would do it totally differently now if I had the chance to start over. I would have a 3 bay wide garage with one space for a lift. The layout I have is great for 2 cars because you can open the doors and walk around the cars easily, but you end up with a lot of wasted space because of it. I also got stuck with a floor that's sloped too much because I used an architect that had his head up his a$$ and a contractor that sloped the floor even more than was specified.

I like your garage, as a big 2-car.

If you don't have room for a 3-car wide garage (like me), then would you do anything different to your deep garage, now that you have been using it for a while? I am planning a 25x30 with a 4-post lift on one side and a garage door on the back of the other side (pass-thru) with an open carport behind the pass-thru. The workbench would be behind the lift.

Thanks,
Jeff

It might be really tight with the lift on one side with a deep 2 car configuration. Before committing to that, make sure you'll be able to drive past it and that you'll have enough room to open the car door so you can get in and out of the car when it's positioned on the lift. What kind of cars do you work on? If they are small cars, it's probably no big deal.

Why not make the area you are planning for the carport part of the garage and put the lift there? It won't cost that much more to enclose the caport area you're planning.

Also, make sure you'll be able to easily pull into and out of the garage. Mine is too close to the covered patio that's attached to the back of the house and backing out of one side of the garage is very challenging. If the garage were 5 feet shorter, it would make a world of difference. For me a 30 x 30 configuration would be much better than the 26 x 35 that I currently have. Carefully plan your garage to your site. That's all I can say. Ask a lot of questions here and spend an extra couple of months planning it out. Changes are VERY easy to make while it's on paper. Once the concrete gets poured, it's another story.

I didn't know about this site until a couple months ago. I wish I had found out about it while I was in the planning stage.

I have a friend that lives in Southern California, and his lot doesn't allow for anything more than a single wide garage. Since his lot is very deep, he plans on building a garage that is 14' wide, but 80+ feet long. The last stall is going to be a 4 post lift installed. Local regulations sometimes prohibit us from building what we would like, due to set back requirements. Sure glad that I have enough land to build whatever I want without restrictions, other than $$$$.
