Who makes decent extra long screwdrivers?

Not looking for junk china **** that would last one use nor top of the line. If there isn't anything good in that range maybe I'll just get the $90 snap on set.

There was a set in the classifieds but they sold before I could PM the seller.

I bit the bullet and went for the Snap On Set. I'm not a huge Snap On guy but I really do like the long screwdrivers.

I've got SK regular ones, not much use yet, but the handles are nice, I like them, I wouldn't hesitate to buy SK longer ones if I needed them. I haven't had a ton of experience with other brands though, so I do plan on buying different brands, but just so I can try out different handles, not because I have a problem with SK.

I'm not picky about handles tomuch. I'm more concerned about the tips holding up.

I've had some of my Snap On super long (20"+) screwdrivers for 25 years without any issues. Also look on e-bay for deals.....

SK's handles are really nice. Especially those big green ones. More importantly, SK screwdrivers are made by Western Forge. Same company that makes Craftsman USA screwdrivers. Realistically, Craftsman screwdrivers are really well made and when used properly, they literally can, have and will last a lifetime. As will the SK's.

I bought the gear wrench four piece set when it was on clearance for I think 20 or something like that. I didn't expect much but was very impressed. So much so I ended up buying two more sets as gifts for a couple buddies. They are so nice, it'd be a hard value to beat.

Do you have these? And If so how do the tips hold up?

I have the craftsman pro version. Different handles but shanks are the same. They have held up just fine. I don't know if SK makes them in the cushion grip handles but if they do I highly recommend them.

I've had a PH1 Stanley 100 Plus with 10" blade for nearly 20 years.

I think the tip is going to outlast the one on my Snap On SSDEP31B.

So I bought the Stanley in #2 Phillips. Oddly necked down, but it seems fine.

The Snap On ones are pretty nice, also think they are longer than most other offerings. I would have to measure them, but I think they have 24" blade and then the handle.

Pratt Reed.

For the price, the end all be all of USA made screw drivers.

Here's an email I received from Pratt Reed today. Is it still the end all be all???

Glenn,

All Pratt-Read screwdrivers are made in the US. I do know that SK, Stanley and Snap-On are Pratt-Read customers, but I cannot answer any questions about Western Forge, so I forwarded your email to them. I have attached a Pratt-Read catalog.

Sorry, but we do not sell direct, only through our authorized distributors. You will need to order this product from your local PRATT-READ distributor. If you have a Grainger, Fastenal, McMaster-Carr, MSC, Rural King or True Value in your area, I suggest you try them. If they don't have the product in stock, they can order it for you.

Sincerely,

Dyan Mullikin

How long does the shank have to be before it's classified an extra long?

I'm assuming a 10 inch shank is not extra long?

X2 on the SK cushion grip, I have the craftsman pro versions and they have been great. You may also be able to find a Armstrong version which is blue and black.

Otherwise snap on is a obvious choice.

The SKs are equivalent to the now discontinued Craftsman Professional drivers. They have no resemblance to the standard clear handle drivers Sears sells.

I've had some of the Craftsman Pro's for about 4-5 years now, and I'm very pleased with them. I wouldn't hesitate to pull the trigger on the SK Cushion Grips since they're the same driver, just a different color.

What is the point you are making?

I have a Snap On Instinct set and prefer the handle, but the set is 5x the price a similar set of Pratt Read.

My Torx and extended shaft drivers are Pratt Reed. I am completely satisfied with them.

.

That's my point. Same thing, but cheaper. Essentially you paid 5x more for a different handle. Snap on's prices are generally offset by the ease of warranty and service, but in this case it would be just as easy/easier to replace a craftsman screwdriver. Don't get me wrong, I have snap on screwdrivers and the handles are very nice, but realistically they do the same thing my craftsman and SK's do.

Yes the soft handle SK's are the same as craftsman pro. The green handles are clearly totally different then the clear handles, but the driver itself is made by same company out of the same material, same quality. The original question was about the quality of the tips. That's why I compared them.
