Clopay offers an 18 foot wide single door.
Advantages / disadvantages?

My main door is 18' wide, makes it real easy to get cars in and out, with plenty of room between to swing doors. I don't have to move cars to get the lawn mower out. Its 18' x 8' steel and I use a regular 3/4 horse craftsman opener.

When its cold, its one big uninsulated hole in the wall, and rattles pretty loud on windy days, but my weather stripping is shot or nonexsistant.

We hang 18' doors daily here in NC, other than them being heavy I can't see any disadvantages. Make sure they put a strut on every section to keep it from buckling over time.

Not eactly sure what you mean about a Strut on every section?
Is this something that is optional on an 18 foot door?
Do you know anything about Clopay Doors?
Who else makes 18 foot wide doors?
What features should I NOT overlook in an 18 foot wide door?

A strut is a steel reinforcement that runs the entire length of the door. Most man. only give 3 on a 18' door. Some doors depending on how tall it is has 4 sections, on an 8' high door it will sometimes have 5 sections. It is such a large span that over time w/o the strut on any of the sections they will sometimes start to buckle. Cheap insurance to do it when it's installed as it will prevent you from ever having to replace a section later on down the road. All door man make 18' doors they are a standard size. If you get the Clopay make sure it is a heavy gauge steel at least 24 gauge, and have them insulate it as well.

Here are some detail shots of my 18'X12' Clopay shop door, It's 22 gauge, insulated and braced to 160 MPH wind load. It was not cheap at $2400.00 installed W/opener, but it exceeds the need. My homeowner's insurance lists my shop as a hurricane shelter... RED
