hey all, i was wondering what eye protection you guys like to wear when working in the garage. i have a few face shields, one for the garage, one i keep in my trailer for when i trim lawns, and one in my plumbing box, cause it ***** when **** falls in your eyes while working.

that said i know you are supposed to wear goggles under the shields, but i havent had good smaller goggles ever. i did just decide to up grade but would still like to see what you guys use, and what about ear protection.

i bought jackson's the shield, the greenish one, like so

I would never have thought that I would be a big wearer of safety glasses, but after so many years working for a service company in the oil and gas industry I can't do anything without having them on. The stay safe mentality that gets drilled into us at work carries into my daily life away from the office. I even wear hearing protection when running the string trimmer, edger, & blower (different attachments to a single powerhead).

At work if you're grinding you have to wear safety glasses inside of a full face shield.

Agree with gofastman. It has to be comfortable.

We use safety glasses from a company called Masterman's. I wear prescription custom safety glasses 24/7, side shields removeable, but the guys tell me the Masterman's are the lightest and most comfortable they have ever worn, at about $1.38 a pair.

I have better than average peripheral vision and I'm also sensitive to distortion in lenses so I'm really fussy about safety glasses. For along time I didn't were them. After a trip to the ER to have metal removed from my eye I decided that I needed to find some safety glasses that I can live with. I tried probably a dozen different models before settling on Smith&Wesson 38 special glasses. I keep several sets with clear lenses in the shop, a pair with clear and a pair with smoked lenses in the truck and a pair of each in my carpentry tool box. I find them comfortable and the lenses are really good quality. They fit close to my face so they provide good protection and the wrap around style keeps enough of the frame out of my peripheral vision that they don't bug me.

I was the same way. In my younger/dumber years I never would even think of wearing safety glasses. But since working in manufacturing since I was 18, wearing safety glasses is a must for me now.

I don't ever drill, grind, hammer, dremel, or work on my back under a car without them anymore. Eyesight is too important and it would be mighty unpleasant having a drill bit explode and stick in my eyeball. It would be something I would regret for the rest of my life

I just replenished my garage stock with a few pairs today. After having many that seemed to want to just fall off my face I came across the Uvex Genesis. They fit me great and have since been using the Uvex Genesis XC which provide a little more coverage. I get a few pairs of the regular clear lenses, then get a couple different lenses for inside and outside jobs.

Harbor Freight has a red and black set hearing protectors. It looks like a set of headphones. They are sometimes on sale for $4. They work well, and are super inexpensive.

Like some of the other posters here, I wear them always when working in the shop. I have walked up to a grinder before and, as usual, I was thinking about what I was going to do and how best to approach the work(i always try to stop and think before i hit the switch, sort of visualize what i am about to do) and something wasn't right. After a few moments I realized I did not have my glasses on. They have become so much a part of the work process that I knew something was wrong, even though I didn't know what it was at first. If that makes sense.?

BTW, I have been using safety glasses with a 2.5 diopter, it ***** getting old.

A metalworker friend recently took a steel fragment directly through the cornea. He's not out of the woods yet with that eye. He was wearing prescription (non-safety) spectacles.
I got THESE to wear over my prescription glasses.

not always true. any vision center should sell prescription z87 safety glasses with removable side shields. sams club vision center has a pair i've been eyeballing for some time.

i've heard enough horror stories that i won't do anything without safety glasses. used to be when using a circular saw or table saw i would squint to help keep saw dust out of my eyes then afterwards i would use eye wash to flush the dust out. then one day i stopped and said "what the h**l am i doing? i need safety glasses and a shield for this type of work".
i won't mess with my ears either. the wife loves standing front and center stage at concerts. i'm the nerd wearng earplugs. if i forget my plugs i'll wad up a paper towel and stuff it in my ears. when we move into a house and i start mowing the yard i'll invest in a set of earmuffs that will plug into an mp3 player.

i always wear eye protection these days. there's been many times where i never did and could've easily done damage. i have several pairs now and keep them readily available. i wear them anytime i'm in the garage working or in the yard. they're the $5 hf ones that are completely clear. i also have a pair that i use when i'm on the range that i'll wear occasionally.

Always have some sort of safety glasses laying around, rarely ever wear a facesheild. My only requirements for the glasses are they are comfortable and don't limit my vision.

I use THIS Sellstrom as a general purpose face shield. I prefer it because it has a shade-5 flip down for oxy-fuel welding and cutting.

Came from Sears.com and made in USA!

Harley Davidson. Comfortable fit and good view out of them. They wrap around so you don't have the side shields to screw up the periphial vision. They were around $12 ea.

I buy safety glasses 8 or 10 pairs at a time from Grainger when they're on clearance. I also use a face shield over them when grinding or using a chain saw etc. I started wearing ear plugs in high school as I found shooting guns without them left my ears ringing. My dad is 90% deaf in one ear from 21 years of fixing and testing small arms and artillery in the army without ear protection.

My face shield kept my face in one piece when a compound miter saw blew up on me. I wear ear plugs at concerts as well. My sister even wears them at the movies!

I'm long past the point of caring if I look like a nerd or not. My eyesight and hearing is more important.

Wrap arounds AND a face shield while grinding. Wrap arounds for everything else. After getting a steal spec drilled out of my eye, I now use two layers of coverage. Some how the spec made it past my goggles and ended up in my eye.

Side note, I REALLY wanted to ask the opthamologist if I could have the tiny drill he used on my eye. I can think of a bunch of stuff I could use it for.

I hate the eye ball die grinder! I'll be very happy if I never see one of those again!

I wear prescription safety glasses with side shields at work when I'm in the shop and home in the garage.

I use a full face shield with cut-off wheels and die grinders.

Ear muffs with wire wheels, grinders, cut-off wheels, die grinders and sand blasting.

Oakley M-frames with clear lenses here, or a set of halfjackets with clear lenses. Not cheap, but they don't scratch easily like the cheap safty glasses, and I don't get a headache from wearing them all day.

You sound like a candidate for Hi Def Spex, most people think $200+ for safetly glasses is crazy, but they actually improve your vision instead of distort it like all polycarbonates, and they are tougher than all polycarbonates.

I wear safety glasses that are supplied by my employer, they are light and comfortable. I never liked wearing a face shield. As far as hearing protection, earplugs drive me crazy, so I wear earmuff style.

prescription safety glasses. Kind of a ***** to clean because the nature of my work is so dirty and the lenses are so expensive. I can't just rub the lenses clean like i used to when my eyes were 100 percent and i just used regular generic safety glasses, usually because my hands are so dirty. I need my eyes though, so I don't really care. I like Jackson safety goggles and glasses if I'm welding and junk. Just scored me a Jackson Boss welding helmet on ebay for about 120 bucks. Not bad I think!

For eye safety, I suppose goggles under a face shield would be best. I have in the past worn safety glasses only to have metal chips bounce off my cheek, then bounce off the inside of the safety glasses lense into my eye. All costing me great pain, eye surgery and 10 days with both eyes patched. Fun week and a half off work.

I give everyone the same advice that was given to me. I started at a small machine shop about 5 year ago, didn't wear safetys and no hearing protection (young and dumb) but a co worker finally convinced me I needed some safety glasses. My complaints were the usual: easy to scratch, distorts vision, uncomfortable. He suggested I find a safety supply store here in town and go try on and buy a few different types of glasses. I did and found some Smith and Wesson branded ones with a soft nosepiece and wrap around lenses. Comfortable and they fit right. While not the cheapest, at about 6 bucks I buy two pairs at a time. One to use, one to keep around. Old ones from work either get brought home or to the shop or just tossed.

I did a similar routine with ear plugs now and am a religious PPE wearer.
