For those who followed my first dump trailer build would remember it was a 5'x8' with a single 7k lb axle. That trailer was great if you needed to grab a couple yards of dirt but it physical size was getting annoying if your hauling anything bulky. I finally got to the point when I was tired of the old trailer being to small so I decided to sell the old trailer and build a new one. The new trailer will be a 6'x10' with tandem 3500 lb axles and with brakes on both axles. With a front mounted 3 stage telescopic cylinder.

I pre-made the dump bed hinges since it was a time consuming part of my previous trailer. The hinge brackets are made from 3'x4" 3/8" tube, 1" CR round bar welded to a 5/16" plate keeper bracket. The part that attaches to the upper bed frame is 2" .188" tube which was coped to the 1.5" .250" wall DOM pivot tube.

So this weekend I started to build the lower frame of the dump trailer. I had 3 20 foot sticks of 5"x6.7 lb-ft channel delivered late last week which will be for the lower frame. First thing was to weld the hinges to the channel frame rails. Next was to tack then square up the frame, then layout the spring hangers. Next was to build the tongue which I spent a bunch of time on making sure that all my measurement are correct and most importantly that the tongue is perfectly square to the axles.

First thing was to flip the trailer right way up so I don't have to lay on my back to do over head welds when the trailer was upside down. Next was to build a gusset for the front of the tongue behind the channel coupler. I bent the 1/4" plate gusset in my press brake so it will also double as a place to bolt the 5k lb drop leg jack to. I'm going to be sinking the tool box between the frame rails so it won't look so tall but I had to paint the inside of channel now since I wont have access when the tool box is welded in place. I did'nt have any black paint so red will do since it wont be visible.

Looks like you're off to a good start. What kind of pump and cylinder/scissor hoist are you planning to use?

Made a little progress after work today. I made the lower mount for the telescopic cylinder. The mount consists of 1.5"x3" .188" tube with 1.5" .250" DOM tubing and 1" CR round bar for the pin. I also welded the tool box to the tongue, with the width of the trailer I was able to sink the box between the channel.

I'm not sure exactly what pump I'm going to use but it will be power up, gravity down. For the hoist I'm going to use a front mounted 3 stage telescopic cylinder (like in the pics). I'm not sure yet what stroke of cylinder I'm going to buy a cylinder with 90" of stroke will give me a 45 degree dump angle. Or a 108" stroke will give me a 55 degree dump angle. I'm worried the longer cylinder may put CG to far back and in certain situations the bed may not come down.

Subscribed. What is your budget for the build?

I'm hoping no more then $4k but I made a expense sheet and I'm keeping all my receipts so I can know the exact amount.

I see a Princess Auto sticker there! Cool!
I was at the dump one time and the guy beside me his load didn't come all the way out, got hung up. he couldn't get it down because all the weight was off the cylinder. so yeah, need to be careful on that one, the 55degree would be nice tho

Just an FYI to OP, Cerka Trailers in MIlton has good pricing on stuff, sometimes better than PA . Not sure if you're driving distance to them or not.

Cerka is a good source for trailer parts im about 35 minutes NE of them. Im going to get my pump and cylinder from their.

I am going to follow this build, I have been needing a dump trailer more frequently lately, but every one anyone around me has is only rated for a total of 14k and the trailers typically weigh 4-6k empty. I want to be able to put 15k or more in a dump trailer and dump it, so I need a 24k rated trailer with the trailer weighing less than 8k preferably. Dumping that kind of weight will be the problem though with electric over hydraulic if I had to guess.

Garage door spring, some cable and pulleys! That'll bring it down.

After work today I spent a bunch of money at the trailer supply place. I bought a set of 205/75/15 radial tires on galvanized wheels, Hydraulic power unit with a 3 gallon reservoir, tandem fenders, brake away system, hinges & latches for the barn doors. Safety chains, and other miscellaneous parts, I ended up opting for the 108" stroke cylinder since I was looking/ measuring the trailer and I will only have 13" of bed length behind the pivot point so I will have enough weight to retract the cylinder.

Since its the Canada Day long weekend I managed to get a extra day so its a 4 day weekend for me. This is a update from yesterday and today. On the lower frame I had to finish up all the odds & ends and I needed to fully weld everything. I made a license plate mount out of some 1/8" to protect the plate. I hate how a lot of trailers have their license plate hanging down below the trailer unprotected and they get bent to ****. Next I made the dump body guides out of some 3/8" flat bar. I also made the mount for the safety support, I did'nt have any tube for the prop itself so I just made the mount so I can keep going.

I don't like the looks of the spare tire mounts on the outside of the trailer so I made a under mount. What holds the tire in place is a 1" bolt with a oversized washer that I plasma cut out of 3/16" and two 8" long handles that are made from 5/8" round bar. Luckily the tire sits a bit higher then the tongue so it wont have to worry about it hanging down and something hitting it.

Since I finished up the lower frame today I was able to roll it out of the garage and to take it to the shop so I could prep it for paint. When I rolled the trailer out of the garage both tires rubbed the weather stripping on the garage door so its a good thing I did'nt build the trailer any wider. After disassembling the trailer I was able to spray the primer and paint before dinner.

For some reason I've been having a problem with uploading pictures on here. Some images upload fine and some will fail or ill get a message about some security code error.

Anyways I spent my morning reassembling the trailer, then I started on building the rear bumper/cross member this afternoon. This trailer will have 2 small doors that fold down and the ramps will slide out. The ramps will be stored under the dump body frame and will accommodate 14" wide x 5' long ramps. I'm using 8" x 11.5 channel for the bumper, I cut out holes for the ramps then I tapered up the ends of the channel for aesthetics. Since I cut the flange off of the ends of the channel I made a new flange out of 1/4" flat bar and welded it on. I ground down the welds so my added on flange looks the same as the factory flange. I also added the mounting points for the ramps using 3/8" flat bar.

Looking good! What kind of paint are you using? I know most dumb trailers take a beating and usually look like hell after a short time

Today I finished the rear bumper. The ramp enclosure doors are 1/8" steel with full width of heavy piano hinge and the doors are held closed with lynch pins. Next was to start laying out the dump bed frame then tacking in the cross members. The frame is all 3"x4.1 channel, I'm trying to limit the use of tube in the trailer since tube steel trailer are bad at rotting out up here. Tube is a lot nicer to work with then channel since coping is a PITA.

So i've been trying to do a hour or two of work in the shop in the evening this week. So far I've gotten the bottom of the dump bed frame welded out, fabricated the angle iron brackets for the ramp to slide into. I also flipped the dump frame and have it positioned onto the lower frame. The material for the dump body should be delivered tomorrow and I'm getting a fab shop to bend up the floor/sides and the front bulkhead on their press brake.

will you have any issues getting a safety certificate for it, being it's home made?

No it should be fairly easy, I probably won't bother getting the commercial vehicle yellow safety sticker though. My past few trailers had the same GVW as this one and i've never been hassled by anyone.

Thanks I just grab a small off cut from the same channel and just trace the flange shape then just cut to the line using the grinder, porta-band, or plasma.

So its been a little while since my last update but I was at a standstill waiting for the parts being bent up for the dump body. I picked up the parts today and the floor and sides are 11 ga. steel. Originally the sides and the floor were suppose to bent out of 2 5x10 sheets with just a seam down the middle. But bending it that way I couldn't find a fab shop that had a press brake big enough to bend that large of a shape. So I had them bend the sides and 6" of the floor then I will have a 5x10 sheet to fill in the middle. I also had them bend the front bulk head and tarp cover out of 1 piece of 11 ga.

Well it's finally looking like a dump bed. I got the floor, sides, and front bulkhead all tacked together. I welded 6 D rings to the sides so nothing catches on them like if they were on the floor. On the top edge of the tarp cover I added a piece of 1.5"xx1.5" .125" wall tube for reinforcement and it will have 20 clear LED penny lights that will illuminate the bed for loading at night. Looks like tomorrow I will have a few quality hours of welding.

So I spent a good chunk of my morning fully welding out the trailer floor. But once that was complete I added some reinforcements to the front of the bulk head and I capped the front corners with flat bar on a angle for aesthetics. Next I picked up the dump bed with the skid steer and placed it on the lower frame so I can get the proper positioning of the fenders. I also started to build the bolt on mounts for the cylinder bracket.

After work today I made the brackets for the cylinder, They are made of 1/4" plate. Tomorrow evening I'm going to build a horseshoe shaped stiffener that will wrap around the back/ sides of the cylinder and will help the 1/4" brackets in any lateral forces.
