Look like fun! A welder is on my wish list and cant wait to start burning some steel!

Why are you going with a front mount cylinder as opposed to one mounted underneath like i see on most smaller trailers? Is there different advantages to that style?

The biggest advantage of the front mounted cylinder is 100% of the cylinders force is lifting the bed, where the under bed hoists loose 2/3 of the cylinders force due to the geometry.

I have a dump with a front mount cylinder too. Its the way to go! It will lift anything you put in the bed. Only downside is when the cylinder starts to leak you get oil on your trailer..not a big deal though..

Interesting, I guess it makes sense but why do most manufacturers put the cylinder under the bed? Is it cheaper?

I finished fabricating the cylinder bracket this evening. After cutting the horseshoe shaped gusset I welded out the bracket parts on the bench since its much more comfortable. I just tacked the bracket to the bed so I can check for interference with anything which their isn't but I did'nt leave much room between the cylinder and the tarp cover.

Yep a traditional cylinder is a third of the price of a telescopic.

How's the duty cycle on your mig welder? Any issues on a big project like this?

I've never hit the duty cycle on my 210 MP. I've had the gun hot enough where it was hard to hold on to it. But the welder does have a 25% @200A duty cycle.

Some more progress on the dump trailer today. The fenders were a bit too wide compared to the tires width so I did'nt like the look of them. I cut 1.5" off the back and 4" off the height, I also cut a relief on the bottom of the fenders so they wouldn't contact the lower frame when dumping. I bent up some small fender gussets out of some 11ga. and dimpled died them for grip, the gussets will also have amber & red penny lights in them.

After tacking the fenders & gussets on I completely welded out them to prevent rust bleed like if they were stitch welded. Next I plasma cut the tarp cover end caps/ side board gussets out of some more 11ga. I pre-drilled the holes for the flange mount bearings before tacking it on the trailer, the angled slot is for the tarps anti sail bar

Got a bunch of stuff done on the trailer today. I finished plasma cutting the rest of the side board gussets this morning and got them tacked on. Next was to weld out everything on the dump bed. Which took a good chunk of the day since I had 60+ feet of welds to do. So far this trailer has used 24 pounds of wire.

After I finished welding the bed I hooked the trailer up and pulled it outside. I used the skid steer to lift the bed up so I could make sure the bottom of the fenders didn't hit the tires when dumping (had 4" of clearance). I then separated the dump bed from the lower frame so I could flip it up side down and move it back into the shop. I flipped the bed because I still have to weld the floor to the cross members and I did'nt want to do that much over head welding. My plan is to have the bed completely painted by the end of next weekend. Then after that I will wire up the trailer and the last few thing's to do will be build the barn doors & the ramps.

Looking very professional. How did you do the dimples?

Thanks, they're pretty simple. theirs a male and female die that goes through the drilled hole in the steel. you use a hydraulic press to squeeze the dies together which flares the steel. According to my presses gauge it takes about 12-15 tons to flare a 3/4" hole in 1/8" mild steel, my dimple dies are capable of flaring 3/16" mild steel.

Geez, I bet you are welding in your sleep too!:willy_nil Excellent looking welds BTW, I wish I could lay down welds that good.

The trailer is looking really great.

Yep your are correct.

That trailer is looking really awesome! How much weight do you think you can hall in it and dump?

Thanks, I just calculated all the parts and steel that went into the trailer including the material for the barn doors, and it looks like it will weigh a hair under 2300 lbs empty (not including the ramps). So the payload will be 4700 lbs but with the distribution of the tongue weight onto the truck I gain 10-15% so around 5400lbs. The cylinder is rated to dump 14,000 lbs so I will have no problem dumping anything I put in it.

Well shes all painted up and I've started to do the final assembly. Its going to take me a while to do all the wiring since I made it intentionally difficult for myself. Its going to be few weeks for the next update since I have some more fire pits to fabricate for customers.

That's a nice looking trailer you've got built. I've got an old 14,000 lb. trailer running gear that I need to repurpose into a dumper. You've got me inspired. I have a question for you. Can you include some pictures of the hydraulic press that is to the left side of the picture with the bed upside down. It looks interesting.

Thanx, and keep after it.

I wasn't planning on working on the trailer this weekend but plans change. I got the hydraulics working and max dump angle is exactly what I calculated, 54 degrees. The cylinder has no problem retracting with it being gravity down. I also tackled my homemade LED light bar that uses 20 3/4" clear penny lights and is switched by a waterproof rocker switch. I'm really surprised how bright all those little lights are.

Wow i don't think you have to worry about anything not sliding out when you dump, thats steep!

Its incredible how powerful leds are for being so small!

I know I've said it before, but that's nice
My 5x8 single axle 3500lb dump trailer gets a lot of use. if no line ups I'm in & out of the dump in 6 minutes (and lighter in the wallet too! )
Mine is a sleeper, at first look it you don't realize it's a dumper. new guys at the dump that don't know me always try to send me to the bins where you hand bomb. One kid told me he lost $20 on a bet with another worker, he said no way was it a dump! LOL

All the lights are wired up and working. Late this afternoon I threw on a old trailer plate on and took the trailer for its maiden voyage around the block (country block). The trailer pulled extremely well and straight as arrow, I had the truck/trailer up to 65-70 mph. One more weekend and I should have trailer completely done.

Looks great! Man, that ram sure lifts it high, there's no way a load is going to stay on that trailer at peak lift.

Man that trailer turned out great. If you had to put an estimate together on how much time you have in this build do you think it is worth the money to build it yourself or buy one? I know you typically get better quality doing it yourself, but if you had to put a number to it what would this one cost if a customer were to try and buy it vs an off the shelf dump trailer?

Started to work on the barn doors today. the door skin is 11 ga and has the same bends as the sides. I don't have the correct dies to bend the lip so I bent what I could with my press brake, I had to weld then grind down the welds so it looks like it was bent out of one piece. The main latch will be the cam lock style and spring pins will hold the doors open.

I only had a few hours today to work on the doors. I transferred the spring latch bolt pattern onto some 1/2" plate then drilled and tapped the plate. Then I welded it to the backside of the rear tube so I can swing the door open and it will latch the door automatically. I only got the CAM latch tacked up since it took several tries to get it functioning the way I wanted it. Also got my DOT conspicuity tape installed.

So I painted up the rear doors then installed it and added conspicuity tape to the doors. I have a few days off work this week so today I decided to tackle the loading ramps. The ramps are 14" wide and 60" long. They consist of 3"x4.1 channel for the stringers and 2"x2"x 3/16" angle for the rungs on 6" centers, and 1/2" flat bar for the hooks.

Each of the ramps weigh 62 lbs. Since this style of ramp is the industry standard for equipment trailers I'm not concerned about testing the ramps weight capacity. I was only concerned about the angle of the ramp with the bed down and rung spacing for small tire machines. So I tested the ramps with the garden tractor and it drove up the ramps easily and never scraped the mower deck on the back of the dump bed.
