Fabbed up an adapter fitting

I needed a fitting for the '86 Chevy Power Steering return hose from the reservoir. The pump has a 3/4" tube ****** and I couldn't find a fitting to go from that to -10 37 degree flare. So I made one.
Here is the pump with a long piece of 3/4id hose stuck on it.

Inside this chunk of 1" diameter aluminum is a 3/4" OD "hose barb". You can't see it, but it's in there... :)
MVC002F-vi.jpg

I bought a couple of -10 weld bungs from Speedway. The bung will get welded to the barb after it's turned on the lathe.

Making the hose barb. Can you see it? This was in there all along...
MVC004F-vi.jpg

The weld bung has an ID of about .47 so I drilled the barb out to .50 to make an unrestricted path for the PS fluid.
MVC007F-vi.jpg

Before parting off the "barb" I added a nice chamfer to the weld joint.
MVC009F-vi.jpg

I ran a 3/8th inch bolt thru the fitting to hold everything together for welding.

After welding. I know it's not real pretty but it will do the job without leaking..

Here is the hose and fitting held in place at the pump. Just imagine there is a piece of black hose connecting them together.

I cut the piece of hose down to length and mocked up the fittings.

With the return line attached.

I really don't care for the naked hose clamps so I put on a couple of clamp covers I had in my stash.

Thanks for the comments guys! I had thought about brazing a fitting onto the pump. The biggest reason I can give for not doing that was replacement of the pump... If the pump fails out in the middle of BFE I want to be able to simply bolt on a new one with no hassles...

If availability of a replacement pump is a concern due to being customized, carry an extra pump in the trunk. Duh. :)

Nice work. I recently dragged home a lathe and look forward to projects like that. Being able to say: I got it! No need to special order something.

I think he was referring to the shrink to fit plastic clamps

Nice job, I understand why you didn't want to have a pump with a custom fitting welded on for a driver.

Did you consider turning down the long end of a -10 bulkhead fitting?

Thanks, a -10 fitting is to small to begin with. It would be pretty sloppy after turning down the threads. The piece I made is .875 inches in diameter. -10's are only .75.

Very nice but with a couple more minutes of work you could have made some nice sharpened barbs on your raised area.

Sharp barbs aren't necessary. The pump has a round bead on it. Get the barbs to sharp and you end up cutting the hose when the clamps are tightened. The flat beads will give a lot of surface area for the clamp to seal against.

Yeah, very bottom right. :)

I have looked at those. Kinda spendy for what they are. PLUS if the pump goes out in the middle of BFE I not only have to find a new pump (or bolt on my spare...) but then I have to buy hose clamps.... :eyecrazy:
Can you guys tell I have done a LOT of planning on this build? The van will not be a "daily" driver but, it is not going to be a trailer queen either. I need it to be easily serviced and mostly maintenance free. Adding a lot of customized "off the shelf" parts is going against my plan.

I understand, hard to tell exact diameter by looking at a picture.

Just to throw another idea out there how about turning down a -10 to -12 male adapter fitting? Too short for hose hookup or too thin of a wall on the -12 side after turning it down?

The thread size on a -12 is 7/8-14 which measures .875 over the threads. If I turned off the threads the fitting would be sloppy in the hose and there would be no "barbs" to clamp on.
I spent some time searching for a simpler solution but found nothing that was as efficient or cost effective as the route I took.
I was actually surprised no one makes this type of fitting.

The "can" is held on to the pump by 2 3/8" bolts and the pressure fitting on the back of the pump.
Pump failure ? - just swap the can...
No problem...

Mark,
You're taking a remote reservoir pump and hooking the return from the power steering gear to the remote reservoir ******. How is the pressure from the fluid heating and expanding going to vent? It will blow out the o-ring around the can. How are you going to fill and check the fluid level? What about the reduced fluid capacity since there will be no remote reservoir which also serves as a fill point and expansion area for the fluid not to mention the cap is vented to release any pressure?

What about the return line from the hydra boost brake booster assuming this is for one of your astro/safari vans? What effects are going to be caused if the pressure that is built up in the return hoses is back fed into the brake hydra booster?

Hey Doug, you guys are getting a VERY small snap shot of this build so I understand the confusion. The hydroboost, which is from a '95 Astro, is going to be plumbed correctly. The hydroboost overflow will return to the reservoir I am using. It is a remote reservoir from Speedway which I'll use to fill and monitor fluid levels (this one).

The fitting I made will be fed from the bottom of this reservoir by the black -10 line.
The sytem will be plumbed with a fluid cooler between the gear output and the pump return line.

Mark, I thought you were coming straight off the gear to the fitting that you made. Then I read in your signature that you had Astro and Safari vans. I knew that they had hydra-boost brake boosters and needed a return to the reservoir. It was a little confusing not knowing the whole story.
