I came across some heavy duty map cabinets which I felt would make excellent storage for a welding table. I decided to build a central table that would act a tool storage and fab / fixture table for my shop. I could transfer my hand and measuring tools and get rid of my roll cabinets thus freeing up shop space.
My design started with the general dimensions of the cabinet. I drew out in Solidworks what I felt would be a robust table and started to order my material.
Sadly the cost of raw steel has tripled since I came up with this concept but I decided to press on with the project.
I bought a piece of 1/2" thick 5'x10' hot rolled and had it delivered to a local shop who water jet cut in the tap drill size for a 1/2-13 on a grid of 3".
Here are my efforts so far.
