Is it a bad idea to use faced (paper) batts and then follow up with visqueen on the interior? The batts that I have do not have the staple flap edge but it does sit somewhat tight in the cavity. I still think I need to visqueen it off as it isn't that "tight".

If the two barriers are immediately adjacent, there will not be a condensing surface and thus no problem. If there is any distance between, I would slash or remove the paper.

Not to hijack the thread, but is visqueen a commonly used term in the states?
I've never heard it in Canada, and only know it from my time in the BVI.
I thought it was a British term.

Just curious.

I saw "Visqueen" and immediately thought another Midwesterner (I'm an Ohioan originally). AK surprised the heck out of me. It was a common shorthand for polyethylene film in the Cincinnati area where I went to college, but not so much in my hometown area of SE Ohio. I've never heard it here in Missouri in almost 30 years.

According to the US Patent and Trademark office, Visqueen was originally registered to The Visking Corporation of Richmond, Virgina in 1950, with first use in commerce in 1946.

I have seen disasters with plastic -- be very careful that the building wall can dry from the outside. I never use it.

forAK...... Check out my thread from the last couple of weeks. http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=350546

I had the same questions. Lots of conflicting answers and opinions on this matter. In my thread there are a couple of links posted by other GF members that had awesome information.

After much debate and after changing my mind many time, I ultimately decided with no poly (Visqueen if you will) barrier.

Hope this helps:rocker:
