My eyes are getting bad and i can not see a line with out my readers on. Old age i guess ,if you ask me the only thing golden about the golden years is your *^! never mind. In the last year or so I been looking for vintage machinery lamps. I have a nice vintage lamp for the Wadkin RS Lathe and the Stenner mortiser has a lamp off a printer saw that I picked up. If you have looked on Ebay for any of theses old lamps its crazy what people will pay.:eyecrazy: Even the Delta lamp gets $80 unless you buy a scroll saw and then you would still have $78 for a machine. Now I'v looked and I'v looked but there very hard to come by. I got way to many machines that need lamps and I just don't want to spend my money on these over priced fixtures.

Problem is some of the lamps can be real cool and i must say I like the 40s and 50s for style. here are some i think are cool






I was Lowes picking up some bulbs and I found these clamp on lamps. Not near as nice as the old ones but there $8 and come with a URL sticker.




so I had this clamp on kicking around the shop and I tried it on a few places. The verdict is the clamp ***** and there was not any place on the machine to clamp it to. That's when it came to me. How hard is it to make a machine lamp?


I looked at the lamp again for a few seconds and tore it apart.



Most of the hard stuff to make is there for a lamp so i just needed to make an articulated holder . Bass would be nice, what do I have?

What do you think of the metal shade? I could not stand it, I made about 5 more types if you would like to see more.


would like to have the pics show up but it odd here for that?

Yeah I can see pretty much screwed up the pictures makes my story of lights a little unclear. Any tutorials on how to load pictures here

Nice job. I have salvaged a number of machine lamps off printing equipment, but still like the Moffatt lights bought some on eBay they do well with either Halogen or LED PAR lamps. They do not have a vintage look like the Delta $80+ "Retirement lights", or others but they function well.

great job on the lights. Ive been facing similar issues with lighting on machines, I have found these Ikea lights to be good for getting a lot of light in close to the work without getting in the way. I had some more traditional lights, the problem I had was the shade is so big, by the time I got the light close enough to make it bright enough to see, the shade was in the way. the other issue I had with the bigger shades is they are heavy and trying to get the joints locked in place so machine vibrations wouldnt make them move was near impossible.

thanks guys for the lights choices/links i have seen most but there just not what i am after. More of a vintage thing and well i like to make mine.for the most part it looks OK but the plastic was rubbing me wrong and i did not like the the tin color shade so i painted the outside to go with the machine.



The problem with making the lights is you need a socket with a screw on the end for a shade with and the switch control at the socket. I find some brass ones too my machine lamps would look better and to rid myself of the plastic. I looked the net over and found some, the name of the thread is Uno and found many once i goggled that.

One of the places I had luck with was the lamp repair shop. Not to many places like that a round anymore so if you find one there worth a visit. I got sockets and parts for $10 one of which I used for version 2.0.









The brass is way better I think but the shade is still to large I agree so my next version is spoon shade.

did you spin the shade out of aluminum? supposedly not as hard as it looks but I've never tried it...

Metal spinning is something i would like to try all these are just clip on shades so i did not make the shade. the was the next thing for me to do and i tried silver spoons i picked up cheep at the flea market.

these socket hold the small bulbs like the old xmas lights








The saw with the version 2 lamp is a Speedax made in England from the 20s wood metal. Kind of looks like a Walker tuner but older by about a decade. speed range is 80 to 6000 surface feet per minute.

Is there a way to in-bed video on this site?

I have seen the sewing machine lights and there very pricey on Ebay,

these lights are for shop lighting over head of the machines and out doors for the mill shop. had a real time to figure out how to embed the video but got it.

Its not really embedded so your reputation is good:Das It takes you to YouTube by a pic link, Schor the one that show me the dazzling trick. I have seen on this site code that does embed but its way above my pay scale. Schor with time could figure it out.
