I missed an opportunity on a Wilton vise but the seller sent me photos of the vise shown below. His initial offer was $200. I could probably get him down to $150. The vise is a 1970's Craftsman 4.5 inch, made in Japan. The Craftsman item number is 391.5197.

I have been searching Craigslist here for a month and vises are few and far between here in my area. The size of this vise meets my needs.

My question is this: do you feel this vise is a fair deal for $150?

Should not be a $150 vise. $150 will get you a lot of vise, like a 5" Morgan, Parker, or Reed. What is your location? Many members can help you out.

I've bought a lot more for a lot less BUT its alll dependant on location and patience. If you wait long enough a better deal will come along. Personally I would pass on this one.

Thank you all very much. I am glad that I asked about this, I didn't realize the vise was so over priced.

If it was a "REAL 5197" that price would be great....

^ ^ ^ ^ Exactly . . . . that Seller is trying to "pull wool over your eyes" with boondoggle that plane jane 4.5" vise is the sought after 5197 model.

OP . . . . tell seller that you know he's lying that vise is 5197 model. You've got $40 to $50 budgeted for a vise and see if he'll come clean and sell you vise for appropriate price !! ;)

That's Japanese?

Looks an awful lot like a standard US columbian machinist vise...

I agree. It's a decent vise but still only worth ~$50.

If you're in Austin, your're not looking hard enough. You should expand your search area to Craigslist Houston and San Antonio. You may find someone who travels to Austin on a regular basis OR find another GJ member in those areas that can help accommodate you.

Best of luck!

Going on my own on this one...I think that is a USA columbian 604 1/2 m3 *********** machinist vise which I think sells for about $500-ish new.

150 is not a steal but not a rip off either. If I needed a good vise I would top out at 150. In general, I disagree with every response in this thread.

He sent the OP a picture with the model number right there on the side, told him it was made in Japan, and gave him a price. Not sure where the misrepresentation is. :dunno:

The seller probably got his info off of garage journal and went off info provided by a bunch of dudes who didn't know what they were talking about.:lol_hitti

If that vise is actually Japan then I will have to eat my hat but until I see that word cast into it...
