Can anyone offer some insight as to what a fair price for this Baldor grinder would be? Assuming that it works...

My buddy got a box of tools from his dad that were originally his grandpa's. Long story short, my friend and his dad aren't very handy and neither one have any interest in keeping the tools. I told him that I was interested in a few things, but want to give him a fair price.

That Baldor is nice but you're missing a side cover, one guide and both shields. You'll spend three times what you buy it for chasing down the missing parts.

If I wanted a service grinder, not a fully restored unit, I would go 15-20 bucks for it as it sits. This of course assumes that it works fine.

What is the HP? If it is 1/3 I would offer $25 and a 1/2 I would offer $35, and that is the "Friends" price. Personally, I very rarely use eyeshields on my grinder (I just wear a face shield) and usually I only use one tool rests and keep the other one off.

If that was at least a half HP and close, I would hop in my car right away if it was offered at 50. But that is here.

That's the type of info I was looking for... thanks everyone. I didn't want to offer him $20 and find out that it's really worth $200, and vice versa.

I'm amazed at the range of prices being offered. People are either clueless on Baldor grinders or are deliberately lowballing.

Baldor grinders (and electric motors in general) are some of the best in the world.

Shiftless and SSdave are spot-on with their assessments. Offer your friend $50 because it's missing part of the right side guard - which is a reasonable lowball offer. If complete and a little cleaner, it could easily bring $150.

Keep in mind that prices vary widely by region. People are not always clueless or low ballers. ;)

Last weekend I walked past a nicer Baldor grinder at the flea market and it was priced at 30 bucks. At the end of the day, it was still sitting there.

Fair enough! I certainly know that to be true for bench vises. Here on the left coast, vintage bench vises are generally harder to find and way more expensive than those in the Central and Eastern time zones.

I picked up two Baldor grinders in my area. One was $35 and the other was $45, and they both ran great and had all the parts. I know Baldors are a great grinder. Not trying to start an argument, just sayin'.

what was the HP of the baldor grinder in the picture? the old 1/3 hp grinders they made were more powerful and still are today than most 1/2 hp grinders of different brands. plus they were designed to run all damn day or close to it.

if your friend's grinder isn't making any weird sounds you can live without the guards, but wear safety gear if you use it without them on. if it's a 1/2 hp $50 is a friend's price and if i saw one for $75 i'd probably buy it. i just found a 1 hp block for $100 that i won't drive an hour to buy because i'm busy today and because it's not a round top, but if it was a 1HP Baldor i'd have left last night at midnight and been at the seller's garage door this morning.

some of the other tools look ok, but nothing stands out as really worth more than $20 for them all so if you want to be friendly and the baldor works fine offer him $70 for everything and i bet he'll be ok with that.

I have 2 of the same model. First was at auction and I paid $45 after fees etc. It is complete with had guards and rests with a wire wheel one side and a course stone on the other. 2nd I picked up a couple of weeks ago for $25. It is in same condition as the one pictured. Being Baldor I know they will serve me for the rest of my life in my non-commercial usage. I believe I got a great deal on both and would have paid more if needed.

Hope you have made your offer by now.

Exactly my line of thinking - I figured I'd give him $100 for the grinder and a few other items that I know he'll never need and I wouldn't mind having. I'm also going to make him hold onto a few things. I've been helping him learn how to do some simple things around the house and his current took kit is pretty limited.

Lol so it's worth 1/2 what a new horror freight will cost. Ok.:lol_hitti

As we discussed earlier in the thread, a used Baldor grinder that is missing a few parts is worth $30-75 depending on what region of the US you are in. I personally value this grinder at about $50 and plan on purchasing a few additional items, some of which are not pictured.

HF bench grinders appear to top out around $55 for an 8" model. I could either buy a new HF grinder, or a used Baldor that is missing a few parts for about the same money. I'll go with the Baldor.

I'm not suggesting you should pay more I'm just saying some of the prices thrown out in this one are like how many semi trailer loads of them can you supply prices. $25 for that guy is massive suckage
