I'm going to be looking at an old generator, 8hp 4000W 120/240V. Hasn't been run in 15 years or so. It will need a little work but the price is right. I don't really know anything about it. Anybody have any input? From what I've heard these were really good back in the day. Is that true? Worth looking at?

Never knew they made little stuff, ive worked on 3500hp Fairbanks Morse opposed piston diesels the size of semis when I was active in the CG. If its any thing like them it will leak but run forever.

Thanks for the input guys!

Great suggestion Steevo, my next generator will likely be a MEP-002A.

Right now I have a Honda 5KW for backup. This old one just caught my eye. Have a little fun fixing it up and if I can't find a use for it just sell it. I haven't seen a pic of it even but I thought it might be kind of cool.

Fairbank & Morse made a great marine engine. One of the ships I started sailing on in 1987 had (4x) Fairbanks Morse 38D8-1/8OP 8cyl. They are opposed piston with a vertical drive. Those engines were built in 1970 and are still in service today.

Well you never know what you're going to get until you show up. :) It's an old Fairbanks Ward 4KW with a Briggs 8hp. Needs the carb cleaned and the tank is a little dirty/rusted, really not that bad though. It was a backup gen that never left the garage. Picked it up for $60.

*muffler is not pictured but I have it. It was routed out through the wall.
