Hi,

Has anyone done any fake windows on the sides of their garage? I am planning my garage and will not have any real ones, but to break up the 30x12 wall was thinking of either the type that will mount on top of the vinyl siding or maybe built in with the "closed" shutter look.
Looking for any pics/ideas/thoughts/etc.

Thanks
Joe

I did on both gables. Used an old wood framed storm window. Painted the zip panel behind it black. Flashed and trimmed it like a real window.

Kaizen,

That looks great! It appears that you built it into the side of the garage. I am debating on that or mounting it "on top". Any thoughts on that? I am doing a standard 5" vinyl siding.

nope its all sitting on top of the sheathing. i think i used 5/4 for the trim on both sides. Made the frame and cut a rabbit so the window sat behind it but a little off of the sheathing. imo this space and black makes it look real. I then added the top trim to fit with the building. you can do the same thing and use J channel just as you would on a normal window.
btw i installed that when i had a lift on the property. Turned out to be freaking heavy. oh i drilled drain holes at the bottom for any moisture to get out as well.

that is what I am leaning toward - putting it on top. This is also the side of the garage that if I add an outdoor staircase down the road to the attic room, these fake windows might be right in the way! Rather have them screwed in and have to patch a couple of small holes in the vinyl than "reside" the wall.....

That's a great looking window. Good colors and it is designed like a real window giving it good shadows. That's why I've been putting some work into the wood windows in my house rather than replace them with lifeless vinyl.

I'm not really a window expert but one thing I think it should have is a head casing at the top of the window underneath the hood. Just looks a bit off.

Mine has a head casing on it. Used a 1x8 while sides were 1x6. But then I hung the top on it so only a few inches show. Didn’t think it out fully as usual.
I e had these storm windows in my basement for 20 years. These are pre-trippletrack storm windows. One of them had a little slide so you could open for fresh air when installed. They have a little bit of wavy glass but not much. Glad I found a use for them on the property.
