Fake OTC tool ?

I'm looking around for an OTC fuel injection service kit so I can actually use the fuel injection canister cleaner I bough (not realizing I bought the one that didn't come with the basic fittings kit) and I came across this on ebay:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-OTC-655..._Automotive_Tools&hash=item589fe48aad&vxp=mtr

Now I've seen a lot of OTC tools in my time but I've never seen one that comes in a red case. I called the company and he said they are genuine OTC but the pricing on this is a good 200 dollars cheaper than anywhere else I've seen. I know there are good deals to be had out there but it seems too good to be true. Is this BS or did I just find a screamin deal here ?

Ya, I know. Thats what I thought. I called the guy up and he said it was OTC. I told him all the OTC stuff has gray cases. I was wondering if this is a new batch or an old batch or just fake. The thing is, its 200 bux.... the same kit on Amazon is 400.

I'm just thinking that in this situation I will end up paying for what I get instead of getting what I pay for.

i wouldnt buy it. my buddy had a older set and box was gray and mine is only 6 months old and its gray. 200 is alot to gamble on if it was the same price has a cheaper product than i would take the chance but thats alot of money.

Yep, you are right. I knew that was the right choice but it was such a good deal I wanted to check with some people.

Aside from the color of the case, it looks 100% legit. I can not even begin to think about the time and effort needed to copy one of these sets. I would think it's not worth it to copy something like this. And since 99% is brass, it would be hard to imagine compromised quality even if it were a copy.

I would go for it.

Oh boy, devils advocate here... hehe.

Well I think the easiest solution, and I can't believe I didn't think of this before, is to simply call OTC and ask them.

Just called OTC. This is confirmed to be a knock off. OTC does NOT make a red ABS case for this product (or any other that I have seen).

Also the actual OTC unit comes with a manual that tells you what fittings and such connect to what cars which this kit doesn't come with. The guy at OTC said the manual alone is 50 bux.

Funny, this! My boss got a screamin' deal on a fuel pressure tester kit just like this one. It wasn't labelled OTC, but HARBOR FREIGHT!!!!!

I had the pleasure of using it first. Looked like the fountains at the Bellagio. Every fitting was machined wrong. Anywhere there was a connection, it sprayed fuel. If you pressed the fittings together tight, they would hold. Boss suggested extra o-rings :wtf: , tether fittings tight with wire :wtf: :wtf:, maybe we can get them machined correctly :headscrat. I suggested the garbage bin. Finally got the OTC set and guess what? No leaks!!!

This is up there with the people who buy a ton of HF items and resell them on eBay (listed as HF/Pittsburgh). I've seen the ratcheting stubby sets (~$15) go for $50 each and people actually buying them...talk about stupid consumers.

There's a sucker born every minute, and that's enough to make a decent living from...

The OTC quick release fitting are unique and not interchangable with other brands. There is an adapter available for using star stuff.

Items like this remind of the Ebay motto, buyer beware.:bounce:

Be careful what type of chemicals you run through the OTC apparatus. the red plastic hose will dissolve if you run BG or Motorvac chemicals through it.

I have an OTC set thats in a red case...although its badged MAC, its an OTC set.

I can take some pics of the manual if you would like for part number reference

Edit the more I think of this the more I think my case is gray, and I believe I bought it off the cornwell man. I was thinking of my tap and die set earlier. Either way I can still get you some pics if you need them

The Harbor freight does not seems to have the same amount of fittings as either the red OTC from the ad or the gray OTC from Amazon. Judge for yourself.

Maybe the red case is a MAC pressure tester. When the MAC sticker is peeled away, it become an OTC tester.

So it's not a fake OTC tool, but possibly an Ebay item that's mislabeled?

An OTC tool would be a really odd item to counterfeit. I can't imagine any company would go to all the trouble, they would just sell a generic knock off with no labels.

Thanks for the tip. Does the stuff from NAPA have problems too ? That is what I was planning on using.

*the picture used is for reference only, and it might not be the actual product.

I called the seller and specifically asked them about it, he said the pic in that auction is accurate.
