Do you guys buy power tools used.....

All mine have been new. While doing research on a new drill, came across blurbs where there are fake Hilti tools floating out there on jobsites, ebay, etc.
Go figure.

And I thought buying a 5K Cisco switch from a vendor only to find out it was registered to Nasa and the serial was fake was the kicker for me...

I don't believe in coincidence so it is odd that this post cropped up. I was thinking about posting a thread wondering if anyone knew why it seems there is a recent glut of 'new in the box' Dewalt tools on craigslist in the Detroit area. Is there a way to tell a fake from genuine. I ask because I recently purchased a 9" grinder. The guy said he was a contractor but very slow so he was getting rid of excess inventory. He said he used to run several crews but was down to him and another guy and he was getting rid of tools he had as back ups. It sounded a little fishy since he was driving a slightly beat up car but he did not seem like a thief... very much seemed like a regular working guy and looked the part of who he said he was. Any info would be appreciated. Do not want to think I got a stolen good or fake good. Have been a victom of thieving in the past and do not wish to be part of the problem.

I only buy from reputable sources but I can only imagine after seeing these pics, how MUCH is out there. I would be curious what a teardown comparison looks like...

Heh - Cisco is completely stupid about so-called "gray-market" hardware. They'll make all kinds of accusations about the hardware being "fake" if it wasn't purchased through an approved VAR.

Not really keen on their whole IOS/NX-OS licensing bit that they've implemented to attempt to kill that market, either.

We made the "mistake" of buying some used gear from a vendor once, and didn't uncover the fiasco until we called TAC and discovered that the last "legitimate" installed-site was American Foods Group in Wisconsin.

We weren't in any real trouble, so to speak, but had to jump through a bunch of hoops to get the gear re-certified so we could add it to our SMARTnet agreement.

Since then, it's proven easier and cheaper to just buy new instead of trying to save a buck on used (though, a negotiated 44% off list helps a bit in that respect.

It's sad that, if you want support (including legit/legal IOS/NX-OS downloads) that you'll pay more for SMARTnet over the life of the equipment than you do for the actual equipment...

One of Cisco's suppliers was selling "counterfeit" hardware through another channel several years ago, but I'd be awfully surprised to hear that there were counterfeit Nexus parts on the market...

I've bought a couple fake WICs off of ebay. They worked good enough for a test lab.

Saw those type of "Makita" tools at a liquidation sale that comes around to the convention center. Clearly fakes but people were buying them as fast as they could get their wallets out thinking they were getting a great deal paying $25 bucks for tools that should easily cost 4X that!

They must have gotten one hell of a surprise when the tool died and the seller had packed up and gone on to the next sale in the next state!

I worked at Sears 20 years ago, Used to get people trying to exchange Craftman, Craftsmen, and Craftzman wrenches. I have no idea where they came from though.

Counterfeit Cisco hardware isn't the problem many make it out to be. The fake WICs that were floating around years ago are the only real case that I know of. The process of reverse engineering and manufacturing a such a complex piece of hardware can't be a profitable endeavor.

I actually like new IOS licencing scheme. Sure, it's a pain in the **** when you're in a bind, but at least now Cisco can honestly say they have a licensing system rather than an honor system.
