Family room decorating ideas

I have a family room with a wet bar in the basement that we never use. Well the carpenters are there to day to do some block repair and start a “make over”.
Here is the problem, I have a ton (maybe a couple of tons) of what everyone says is neat “car stuff” and the wife wants a old car / hot rod styled family room and bar. I also have all the signage from my dad’s liquor store that he sold 30 years ago.

My wife was at the shop yesterday, and spotted these rims and tires in the corner and asks when did you buy these? Hum, 1983, why? Ever going to use them? I mumble something. Well they look like end tables to me. Do you have the center caps for the rims?

List of stuff she has spotted and claimed.

Coke Cooler, one of the 2 vintage fridges, some trim, from a 48 ford coupe. Tail gate from a 1953 F-100 for a drop down wall desk. Old license plates for crown molding.

Then she asks. Can you take one the back of one of the old cars and make a couch with a recliner in it?

I’m just not sure I want to look at this stuff every day.

I think if it's done well, it could work. As well, there's less additional "new costs" involved using stuff you've got, that is, if you fabricate what you need.

It could be worse, you could be shopping for decorations/furniture in Ikea.

The big question is, How much free time do you have? Building the rear section of a car into a couch, etc. is a lot of work, if you want to have it come out really nice.

You're a lucky man and that woman is a "keeper". I have buddies who would kill for a wife like that! I'm a lucky man too, as my wife was the inspiration for our garage, The Hot Rod Grille, and a big help in decorating it. Keep us posted on the progress with pics, pics and more pics.

I would love that! However, the house is her domain. No fun guy stuff other than in my corner of the office. I guess I'll stick to the garage for now.

so what was the problem again?

how about you include other stuff in the room to mix it up a bit. or make a split personality room where things are different from side to side

sounds like a cool room to me though. I do think you will need to build and 'engine' coffee table though

I called her a little while ago and told her I had signed on to the idea. I guess after writing this post I thought WTF am I thinking! The L. Store and cars have been my life and hers for the last 31 years. My son wants to see G-dads lights up.

Thanks for the kick in the ****, I may need more before this is over!

I would suggest you draw up some sketches (or have somebody who is artsy-fartsy do it...) so that you can get an idea ahead of time what things might look like. This will also probably give you more ideas....

The other option is that you box it all up and send it to me.....I'll be glad to be your dumping ground.....
