I am a train nut so I have wanted to have an old caboose and a boxcar in the backyard.
the caboose would be used as a poolhouse with its own bathroom, changing room, small kitchenet and have a deck off the side of it for a BBQ. the boxcar could be used for storage but since I have wanted to have a train layout/trainroom I have though it would be cool to have the trainroom in a boxcar

perhaps I could have a train in the backyard.
caboose = poohouse
flatcar = deck
boxcar = trainroom
another boxcar = storage shed
another boxcar = machine shop

damm..I think I need more property

The color looks like DT&I colors. Wonder if it was one of their engines before the TVA got it? I come from a DT&I family and would love to have it it my backyard along with a caboose. Trouble is, I'd have to lay about a half mile of track to get it here and pay a huge transportation cost.

A low nose Geep? Sorry, I come from NKP/NW country. We like our high noses Here!!! And they're All gone now. Have many pics of the last ones heading for scrap or rebuild in the late 80's. Now THEN would have been a great time to get a unit! When the ole RS-11's, RSD-12's, C-628's were being recycled! Never a train that sounded as good as them old Alco's!! Getting it home might not be quite the hassle you'd think. Rail Ship to nearest freight yard where you disconect the traction motors. Rent a crane to lift off the traction motors and heavy load trucks haul to your local destination. You'd probly pull delivery off under $5K. Good site prep would probly be more expensive than the actual shipping! The thing to wonder is, will your local zoning ord's allow a wheeled vehicle in your back yard? Most cabooses are grandfathered into current zoning. You could probably purchase and have that home for $12K-$15K
I'd sure love to drag a local B&O E-8 steam generator unit home for a kids playhouse and layout! Or even a local towns crumbling bay window NKP caboose!

When my dad work the "yards" they used to use Pullman cars for offices. When the yards started closing up, a dozer shoved them over the side of a large embankment and buried them over.
I've always wanted a caboose, but most of the old woods ones have went by the wayside and rotted away. There are a few of the modern ones out there but don't have the character as the ones with the lookout on top. Now they don't even use a caboose.

I saw that when I read your thread about government auctions. It came up when I did a search in my area, which is Tennessee.

Would be definitely cool to turn into something, though not as "customizable" as a caboose or something with windows and space.

Here is one of many places that will sell you a piece of railroad history - including a dining car!

Man, that's cool! My dad retired after being a conductor for Norfolk & Southern for a while, and would love to have one of those to play in.

That site reminds me of the Chattanooga Choo-Choo here in Chattanooga. Here's the site:

It's the old train station. Restored and very gorgeous if you love old architecture. It's one of the largest dome buildings in America, I believe, and looks like it's from the turn of the 20th century. The cool thing is that they have preserved rail lines, put cars on them and converted them to hotel rooms. Hotel has restaurant, bar, stores, and so on.

Yeah, I was really diggin that Pennsy/NYC ctr cupola cab! I could have had the Catawba Island(it's a penninsula) depot for free before it was torn down. The task of moving that gorgeoous building 35miles and across the Sandusky Bay was just too much. Got some of the spectacular architectural details from it. But sad, just sad when they came thru with the articulated bucket loaders.

who says you have to take it home
make a deal with a railroad museum to let you keep it there for display and you just want to have access to it

back in 99 I went to railfair in sacremento ( and I was there the week before when they were bringing the equipment in) and was amazed how they brought some of the older steam locos in on flatbeds and how they were able to get them off.
I was also amazed at how much of that equipment was in private hands, including someone that had gotten their hands on a GP7 demonstraitor and restored it

and my wife thinks I am a train nut with the room full of lionel trains that I have...
