FANUC power supply for a CNC

Hello,
helping a friend with a CNC that has stopped working. The power supply for the main electronics seem to be the culprit. No telltale signs, may be a bad component. Main parts are FANUC custom IC´s.
Does anybody have access or tips where to find a schematic?
FANUC POWER UNIT, Type no A16B-1210-0510-01. Have found a later version -0511- similar but not the same.
It appears that the selfcheck circuitry is dead, all supply voltages are present but the selfcheck which signals "start" is not working correctly, I think.

It may be proprietary so if that is the case would have to contact Fanuc or their rep.

I have been involved with a couple of "dead Fanuc's"
Both times a door switch or safety interlock switch failed and pulled the power supply down. It would take the monitor and keypad down so you can't do anything.In one case the aforementioned switches were all on plug connections. I was able to unplug all of them and then one by one plug them in till I found the bad one.
Also, there was a panel mounted fuse. And it is a GE Fanuc proprietary fuse. If yours is blown, pull it out and solder leads to it and use regular spade type fuse of the correct rating. This will allow you to troubleshoot without wasting a bunch of expensive fuses.

Thanks for the input. Will check out. Fuses are all OK ( 4 in total)
Have checked and loaded the power supply on my bench.
All OK except the supervision circuit.
Will reinstall and measure the supply voltages in place.

Fun with no schematics, makes you think more!

still trying to get the CNC to work. My conclusion that the power supply was OK was WRONG.
THe 5 VDC to the actual intelligence (CPU + peripherals, lots of them) needs around 9 Amps, remember this is old stuff. And the FANUC POWER UNIT, Type no A16B-1210-0510-01 dives at around 1,1 Amp. So I tweaked a piggyback +5V 15A power source and the machine run like it should.

I hate buying new parts if the culprit is repearable.

Have not been able to find a schematic of the FANUC POWER UNIT, Type no A16B-1210-0510-01. My goto sites for schematics does not have FANUC at all.
I found a " system drawing for a FANUC POWER UNIT, Type no A16B-1210-0511-01. Same pinout and voltages but the circuitry was more modern and not much help.

Can anybody please help.

Unless you are an actual Fanuc service tech, they keep their stuff pretty well guarded. A long time ago a friend was able to get some remanufacturered fanuc parts for his lathe and send in his broken ones for the core charges. They also knew what part #'s replaced which as things were being tweaked all the time.

If you are getting a voltage drop like that, first suspect thing I would look at is the capacitors.

All obvious and "regular" faults are eliminated. Caps, overheated parts, power semiconductors. I have doubled up on the filter caps both primary and secondary, no change whatsoever.
I have scoped the primary of the stepdown transformer and it is obviously not correct. There are remanents of a square wave voltage but a very large amount of spurious frequencies also. At some 5V load, the small amount of square wave disappears and only spurious frequencies with lots of spikes remain.

Can be nonfunctioning drive circuit, flyback control and whatnot.

Took a chance and wrote FANUC Swedish service. And within an hour I got a VERY helpful reply. Factory manual for the supply, at no cost. Good luck, we like the repair attitude, most people either scrap old machines or call us.
The guy must have read Sennet´s Shop Class as Soul Craft.

Awesome, I'm assuming it has proper schematics and the information you need in there to do a thorough diagnosis.

Fanuc's (like most controls) kind of are a frankenstein system. They never really have done a complete ground-up overhaul, they just slap on newer bits here & there but at the core is a lot of old tech... it's crazy but it works.

Hi,
With the aid of the block diagram from FANUC Service in Sweden the repair was rather fast.
There was a voltage drop between the internal +15 V supply and the main ASIC.
The culprit was a faulty thru-plated connection, resistance was around 10 Ohms, should be 0.
Put in a jumper and with a healthy +15V to the main ASIC the power supply worked like a charm.
The entire control unit draws around 10,2A at +5V.

All is well. Never Quit, works all the time!!

If I am correct you connected 15v Dc to black connector for testing witch testing point pin should be 5V?

MBfreak do you remember where you put the jumper on the Fanuc power supply board? I could not tell from the pictures you posted.

Call Fanuc. Have the F number ready. If a CNC has a F number like a robot.

Fanuc robots have a F number on the base of the robot and the controller.

CNC machines are built by various manufacturers. Fanuc controls are integrated into the machine. Fanuc did not build the CNC machine, only the controls.

I was going to write a longer post but will keep it short and to the point. If you need information on a machine your first point of call should always be the manufacturer. If that fails then go elsewhere.

They made the machine and usually have all the required information. Nobody knows better than the people who made the equipment.
