We are in the process of building our barn shop on property near our home. There is no dwelling on the land. It seems difficult to find insurance. We found liability coverage but not for the contents. Has anyone ran into this before? Any help would be appreciated. Property is in northeast Florida. JP

I've always had to live on the peoperty in order to be able to get contents insurance. I built my shop here before the residence and was in the same situation as you find yourself til I built the home. Agent said that with no on site security, no insurance.

I am an insurance agent in Utah. I would write a policy that would extend the liability from your primary residence and then insure the so and the contents. Nearly a third of my business is farm related and that is how we do it. I would recommend that you contact a southern farm bureau agent

I would echo the idea of checking into Farm Bureau insurance. Their rates seem to be about on par with the others, maybe slightly lower, but they are much more in tune with agricultural property coverage. Ag is just a sideline for everyone else, and they all act as though they are doing you a huge favor by offering it at all.

Yep! Check out what is available via your local Farm Bureau agency or what cooperative arrangements may be in place between the FB and insurance companies for your state. In Ohio, Nationwide has a deal that discounts their insurance for Farm Bureau members.

My State Farm Ins. house policy cover the contents of my workshop which is not located on the same site as my house. No additional riders were required.......
