Very nice digs...I like what you done to the place.
Sounds like you have good neighbors too!
Never do anything to hurt that relationship!
Looks like you have enough property and projects to keep this thread going well into your 70's!
Thanks for sharing a bit of your homestead and projects.

I'll be content with the 250, should have 50-75% more power than the original engine after I mod it. It'll be a world of difference in the light little '61.

250 should be a lot lighter. Not much you can do with that manifold.

Yeah, its unfortunate Ford USA never took the small sixes to their potential like they did down under...

On the brighter side though, the 250 I got has the largest intake log ford made... flows a lot better than the dinky 144 log. I'll also increase the intake hole by 100% for a webber 2 barrel... take that strangled one piece casting!

My windows came in and I installed them... paint booth now sucking air only through the filters! Quieted down the exhaust fan noise a lot.

I purchased a Logan 825 lathe a while ago and my old man was kind enough to pick it up and bring it home as a x-mas present... nice present, it was 10 hours away! It came with its original work table and some tooling. The previous owner looks to have taken very good care of it. Its 3 phase so I'll get a VFD and run 220 to it.

Finally got a break from school and work to get some stuff done...

I moved my old small workbench out to the garage portion of the shop and started building a larger lower one to fill its old spot.

I ran across a seller on craigslist last year that had this for sale:

I though it was pretty cool but the seller and I couldn't come to an agreement. It looked simple enough so I thought I'd make my own.

I cut the legs and braces out on the chop saw and then ghetto cut the notches out with the skill saw. The only real trouble so far was finding the 1/2 bolts 27" long... I thought about a few ways to make one but ended up slicing a regular bolt and welded some 1/2 stock in the middle.

Once I got the legs made it was on to the bracing on the back, nothing too crazy here, just some time taking parts on and off to get the cuts right.... more ghetto notching also.

I got a bit further before dark but I must say this thing is already rock solid as it sits. Those old craftsmen knew a good design when the built one.

I got the supports for the top installed after lunch...

Installed some plywood as a base to screw the hardwood top to. Its an old door from one of the long gone out buildings here on the farm. I filled in the back inside the frame and diagonal bracing to level it out and then flopped it on top and trimmed to fit.

Spent the rest of the afternoon sanding and then applied some floor finish.

I can't believe it's been a year since I updated!

I finally finished college and got my life back after 2 years of being a full time student while working 60 hours a week... barf!

I celebrated by doing what I wanted to do! First on the list was to start working on the garage again in late fall.

I finished most of the wiring in the garage and got the south east corner painted after the carpentry was completed for the paint booth...

I also got the Logan 825 all put back together and hooked up to a VFD, runs great and is ready to make some chips.

I picked up a finger brake:

... and a No 3 Greenerd arbor press:

View media item 80101
Neither one came with a stand so I have to fab some up...

I stopped by the steel place the other day and got some material to get going. I based my design on this vintage Delta saw stand I found on craigslist:

I spent Sunday cutting/welding and got the basic structures built:

I still have to complete the feet and add some fun detail but they should look the part when I'm done.

Good progress on things in the smaller outbuilding. having decent heat helps to make it available in the winter, I bet you don't do much in the Big Red Barn when temps are < 32 degrees F.

And, congratulations on completion of your schooling at this level. Hopefully it pays-off for you at work.

I recall the 1964 Comet Caliente's set a world record running over 105 mph for 30 days, (I checked, link below) I think they were 4 speed solid-lifter 289's, and they got my attention as a teenager. One averaged 124 mph for 10,000 miles! Pretty-impressive for a Ford of the era, and a good trial by fire for the soon to arrive 1964-1/2 Mustang. The first Shelby Cobras ran the 260 cu. inch V-8's.

My brother had a V-8 4-speed Caliente convertible, a fun car to drive, back in the mid-1960's, I got to drive it occasionally in '67-'68. Pretty-much the Falcon in much of its running gear, as-was the early Ford Econoline, I had an Econoline pick-up for probably > 12 years, 1970's-1980's. It had the 170 cu. in. 3 on the tree.

OK, I found something on the Comet speed run, done at Daytona: https://www.hemmings.com/blog/2015/...-world-speed-and-distance-records-at-daytona/

Did some running today to pick up a welder on craigslist. I've been after a Lincoln 250 for awhile now but couldn't find a good one within 2 hours until this one popped up. Somebody stole the leads for scrap but it came with some extra goodies. Also got a 4" Wilton and a vintage parts cabinet. $150 for the lot, sometimes this blind squirrel does find and acorn!

In the opening post there is a picture of an old time buzz saw that was used to cut firewood. They worked really well, extremely dangerous, but you sure could cut a lot of firewood with one of those things.

I have a tool for sharpening those blades and I used to sharpen them for several people. I could put set in the blades too. I still have the tools to do it with, but I can't see as well as I once did so I am not sure how good of a job I could do putting set in the blade and then sharpening it. I wouldn't mind trying to do it, but hardly anyone uses a buzz saw blade these days so there aren't very many around to sharpen.

Great space! I’m loving the older tools and cars. How is the wood heater doing, looks cold outside in some of those pictures?

Its doing great... I'm burning mostly seasoned ash so it puts out the heat. We had a cold stretch in December where it was around 0-5F for a few weeks and it took longer to get it warm but once there it was golden. Lately its been 10-20F and it has had no issues. I'll be glad when spring gets here though...

The guy at the saw was the owner of the farm from the 30's - 90's. He's cutting wood for the boiler that was in the milk bottling building behind him (currently my shop). He passed away with all 10 fingers so he must have had a bit of luck in his cap with all the wood they cut on the farm over the years!

A lumber yard near my home has a big vintage Diston circular blade on the wall behind the counter that must be 5' in diameter, it has replicable teeth around it's whole circumference... pretty darn cool!

That would most likely be a blade used to saw logs into boards.

Worked on the stand for the Pexto brake today some... Got the feet shaped and welded on as well as the plate for an old machine tag I decided to attach.

When I purchased the brake I noticed a sticker to the left of the PEXTO name casting but couldn't read it... Surprise! Makes me wonder what was made with this particular tool...

Nice place, I like what you're doing with it. I'm really interested in the possible speedster build. Looks like you're acquiring all the right equipment.
I've had the same thoughts with a Buick straight 8.

Getting there... I picked up a model a frame to modify and some 20's Studebaker headlights along with a 20's Essex radiator. Just need a heavy front spring and I can get to building the chassis this summer.

I spent some time today working on the Idealarc...

I got this cheap since the leads were stolen for the copper along with all the wiring out of the garage it was in, lol. Scrappers gone wild.

I pulled the cover and it wasn't really bad inside. I expected some mouse house action but there was no such thing inside. Just dust and some dried grease.

I spent an hour with the compressor, a dry brush and a toothbrush and got the insides nice and clean.
View media item 81141
The common issue with these is the pointer sticking and bending it's actuating arm. The manual says to lubricate it with graphite grease every so often. I cleaned all the old grease off of the gears and pointer arm and applied new graphite grease... the only graphite grease I had.
View media item 81143
The new 1awg lead wire came in along with the ground clamp, electrode holder, and Tweco lead connectors...
View media item 81144
I put some pieces of copper tube around the ends of the cable after removing the insulation to give the screws in the fittings something to really bit into when installing the cables.
View media item 81145
I had to go over the whole welder with lacquer thinner to remove some paint overspray from it's life with the previous owner. I also had to remove some dealer stickers on each side that were water damaged. I followed that with a gentle buffing with some cleaning wax to give it back it's shine... I think it turned out pretty good. It's still got some battle scars but that's just character. She's all ready to go back to work now, looking forward to burning some rods:D

I had this vice that was left here when I bought the place so I thought i'd make a stand and mount it on a heavy base so I could use it to hold stuff at weird angles while I weld.

The vice is a craftsman. The round cast iron base is a flywheel from a late 20's Buick... Sold what was left of the car a few years ago but kept this as a base for something down the road.

Back around February I picked up this old FORD gumball machine... used to have these in the auto parts stores I went to with dad as a kid. He'd give me some change and i'd feed the machine.

I found the base and the matching standpipe... but the pipe was kinda short so I extended it some with some pipe fittings and painted some red accents on the setup.

The Vendo Coke machine showed up last summer but has just been sitting around waiting it's turn for the most part.

View media item 84726
The machine works great... gets cold fast, no weird noises. I did a quick buffing on the outside and it cleaned up pretty good. Plans are to repaint it eventually but just get the mechanics cleaned and wiring replaced to start with.

I pulled the compressor out of the bottom, sand blasted the interior of the lower compartment and painted it. While the compressor was out I blasted its base and cleaned the assembly before painting it and replacing the wiring harness. I also replaced the adjustable feet as they were froze up and no longer adjustable.

I've still got some stainless trim to straighten and the bottle rack system to reinstall but its takes money and cools properly.
